Hello everyone, I'm new to all this, and I'm about to head back to college in a couple weeks. I bought a DVD-R drive because I am tired of having DVDs stolen from me at college. Now im a bit of a fanatic collector, and currently have over 100 DVDS....but its so frustrating when you lose 5-10 DVDs a year and its always the really good movies you end up losing. And its so obvious that its due to theft. I tried using a locked cabinet this year but that didnt exactly pan out well.

Anyways on to my problem...I buy a whole bunch of DVDr discs and I go to try to burn a dvd on to them and it refuses to work. Gives me some crap about copywright laws. Now Im confused since I own the DVD cant I make a copy of it? Anyways any information that could be given to me on how to go about copying all my DVDs would be great....ie what programs to get/use, what dvd disc thingies i should get, how to figure out what type of drive i have....and so forth. I tried reading the faq stuff in the DVD+- thing for newbies but I just got confused.

Thanks in advance for any help!

hi greeble welcome to Afterdawn,

two free programs that will suit what you are looking for are DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter and they can be found in the software section. Usually the best way using these two programs is to rip the dvd to your hard drive using DVD Decrypter in file mode and if the files are too big run through DVD Shrink to compress them to fit on a blank dvd. If you choose to go the route I briefly explained look @ the second link in my signature and there are excellent guides on how to use each one. Also there are guides at the top of the page in the guides section. Good luck and let us know the results.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

Hi all

I'm in a similar position to Greeble except that I have a number of commercial DVD-9 movies to back up which I obtained in the last few weeks(they are 4-5 hours each), I have a dual layer DVD burner and I also obtained a copy of DVDXcopy Express (with built in ripper) from someone - although the CD is about 2 years old and I've not installed it yet.

I imagine that some of my DVD movies will be ARccOS protected??

Will DVDXcopy defeat ARccOS in addition to CSS ??

...would it be better to go for a more up to date solution than DVDXcopy? ...if so which software?

Sorry for several questions ...but would clear up a lot of confusion.

@john

NO, dvdxcopy will NOT defeat the ARccOS, i would suggest AnyDVD by slysoft for that, DVD Decrypter will defeat SOME of them, but, since it is no longer being updated, i would use AnyDVD to get past the NEWEST ones.~

i would go with what matt72 suggested, with AnyDVD in the background for the newer movies (that shrink/decrypter can't handle- those 2 programs handle MOST of the movies nowadays, but, with the occassional few with the new protection, definitely suggest anydvd)

good luck

Thanks for the advice.

I was thinking of copying to dual layer media (without compression) but having seen the cost (5x DVD-R cost) I think I'll stick with DVD-R ...unless DVD+R will give slightly more reliable results??

...If I am copying a ARccOS protected movie will AnyDVD automaticaly recognise this and defeat the protection (without having to run it)whilst running just in the background ...could it cause a conflict with DVD Decrypter ?
