I have some old family videos (I'm old too) of the kids that I would like to edit in Pinnacle 9, since it came installed on the PC and i'm getting used to it. I have managed to transfer them directly onto DVD using a friend's Sony RDR GX3, purely by recording from VCR to the recorder on DVD-RW discs in Video mode (this was suggested by him to be the best mode). I have tried several of the discs on my PC, some of them seems to import OK into Pinnacle 9, but some don't, and when they do import, the audio to video synchronisation seems very fragile, ie when first played through it is OK, but when playing a second time (even without doing any editing at all) the audio is out of time with the video. Should I be going about this in some other way, using DVD Decrypter or one of the other sftware packages I see mentioned in the forums? Any suggestions would be helpful or if anyone can point me to the correct guide on this site (of which there seems to be loads of good information)but I don't know what I should be looking for !

I know nothing about pinnacle 9 but have done similar with camcorder stuff transfered to DVD+RW on a standalone recorder.
I edit using TMPGEnc (freeware) which allows me to make cuts.
Not sure what else you want to do but you would also need something like DVD Decrypter to rip the disc to your HDD first.
I'm amsuming your videos are on VHS. I do this by using an analog capture card (which came with Pinnacle Studio 9 Deluxe Analog/Digital) and a VCR capturing directly from a VCR into the computer. I did have problems with Studio keeping the audio /video in sync on longer captures, over 30 minutes, so I now use Scenalyzer Live for capturing as it does a much better job of keeping the A/V sync and then use Studio for editing the vidoe and producing the DVD. (I'm no kid either...)
Thanks to both byngo and jwhit for there suggestions, I thought initially that putting the video (yes VHS) on to DVD disc would make it far easier to load it onto the PC and work with it, but it seems that it was a BIG mistake and that going back to the original VHSC tapes might be the simplest way. I've downloaded DVD Decryter and got them onto the HDD but was unable to load the ripped files into Pinnacle9.4, which was my main aim since I have worked with that a bit. But even tried loading into TMPGEnc without success. I had tried in the past to load into Pinnacle from a VHS player, but the capture quality was not very good. I was just hoping there would be a way to get windows/pinnacle to be able to access the files from disc so that I could put some basic titles/fades /wipes etc. in and make the audio a bit easier on the ear. At least I now have them on DVD which gaurds against tape deterioration. Did either of you get a book ie Video -editing for dummies to teach you the basics, or was it all from looking at web sites.? Will persevere anyway, in the hope that I can get there eventually. Thanks again.!!
