Need advice for dead console

Hi guys,

My son had a version 7 PS2, with LAN adapter. It worked perfectly
but one day the DVD player began not booting games, and even
scratched 2 of them (Rachet3, Sprinter Cell Chas Theory which
was brand new :-( ). Making it fixed was around 100 euros (quite 120
USD).

So we decided to buy a brand new one, a slim one.

But I read in the forums that one can use hard disk with the LAN
adapter. After a while, it seems that using HD Loader or HD Advance
I can install games on a mere IDE disk (an old spare one I own).
But the problem is that software cannot be backuped and I'm
quite reluctant to give a try due to DVD player illness.

So, could you advice best solution? Till now I see:

1/ try to install a hard disk boot but booting on the HD or the
MC required a modchip (true?)

2/ the newest console can also use an USB external HD but I need
something called USBExtreme to boot, right?

3/ is it possible to boot on an external USB attached DVD player?

1. No modchip required if you use the PS2 exploit. Go to http://www.exploitstation.com or http://www.mikestyle.com/tutorials/exploit.htm for more details. Then you can boot the HD loading application from MC without a modchip.

2. Correct. However USB Extreme has some problems. Search USB Extreme on forums to find the threads.

3. No.
