No DVD movie sound, suddenly

I just installed set of 5.1 Logitech x-5500 speakers and also a USB soundcard (Audigy 2NX) and I am using them in the discrete analog mode with 6 inputs from the Soundblaster 5.1 soundcard.

Everything works perfectly, except I have lost sound on DVD movies, using either of my DVD drives. Both drives are configured for digital output, of course, and both work fine on music CDs.

Thinking this was a glitch caused by installing the Audigy drivers, I uninstalled them (and went back to my internal soundcard) and did a system restore to several days prior, with no improvement.

What's really strange is that I do get DVD sound (with 5.1 effects) on DVD movies I have authored and burned myself from mpegs (using Roxio DVD Builder), but no sound at all on purchased or rented movies.

What have I done?
