Hello everyone although this is my first post I have been following this forum for some time and have gotten some relly good advice from just reading the posts, I have a 4x burner and this media is getting harder to find unless u order online, is it true that I can burn 8x media in my 4x I tried it one time without success but I have since read that you can set the rate at which you burn, is that within your burner settings or within the software (decrypter)I have a NEC1300A burner.
Thank you in advance and once again great forum.

hi and welcome filaman,

you can CERTAINLY burn an 8x dvd-r/dvd+r in your 4x burner...not at 8x naturally as your burner can only burn @4x MAX~

the one time you tried without success, could be a WHOLE slew of factors as to why it wasn't successful. (firmware up to date, using QUALITY/good media, decrypter settings, etc)

the rate at which you can burn is determined by your BURNER settings, hardware is made to be optimized at a particular MAX speed, despite the rated speed of the media, it can ONLY be burned at the MAX speed set by your burner. :)

hope that clarifies a little bit~

hi

dvd decrypter will tell you the firmware version you have once you insert an empty dvd, for example mine is:

SONY DVD RW DRU-710A BYX4 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD-R

Disc Information:
Status: Empty
Erasable: No
Free Sectors: 2,297,888
Free Space: 4,706,074,624 bytes
Free Time: 510:40:38 (MM:SS:FF)

Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: TYG01

the firmware version is : BYX4 (follows my make and model drive, in my case i have the Sony dru-710a burner) yours will be different it's the coding right after your nec1300a :)

in terms of changing your setting, i don't think it's necessary as your drive is 4x MAX speed and using 8x rated media, it will still burn @4x, so, leave it as it is...

for recommendations for 8x media....hmm...hehehe, it's in my signature...i ONLY recommend Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media as they have been flawless for me, don't get me wrong, there are many other ones that are very good quality, but, i only trust these 2 in particular for me personally...Maxell and Sony are also good, in my opinion, IF you get the "made in japan" ones...

stay away from Memorex, HP, Philips, and even TDK (if you insist on using DVD+R format)...these brands are KNOWN to use CMC MAG crap as their manufacturers, naturally, i also would stay away from store brand/generic media too~

hope that gives you a good start...

you are very welcome~ my mentality is, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" hehe :)

until your nec is on it's LAST LEG, then i would suggest getting a new burner, if it still works and manages to produce some good, quality burns, keep it and use it for all it's worth~ then think about upgrading in the future...unless you just got some extra $$ to spend and simply WANT another burner..then be my guest :)

I have that exact NEC 1300 (a TDK 440n) in my spare computer. With firmware update there has been no problem with 8X DVD-R media from TDK TTG02, FUJIFILM03, or Verbatim MCC. You may want to adjust Decryptor burn speed to 4X, but there should be no problem.
