Use Isobuster to extract the mpg files which are already dvd compliant and won't need further encoding. Open Isobuster, select File>Open Image File and open the Cue file. Click on the MPEG2 file. Select all mpg files, right click and select Extract but filter only Mpg frames. Save the new file as filename .mpg. I have used this for DVD+R, so there shouldn't be any problem with DVD-R.

Once I've extracted the mpg files, then what? What do I do, author it or burn to dvd? Like I said, I'm new at this.

Once you have the mpg's, just burn them to a dvd.

No, that won't work. They need to be authored.
Most authoring programs will balk at the SVCD files, and not allow you to author them.
DVDLab will toss up a warning, but WILL allow you to author the disk, with menus etc.

Thanks for the correction. I was sure I just burned the mpg with Ulead Moviefactory.

Ulead authored them, then burned.
Simply burning an mpg may, or may not play in any given player...but it would definitely only play the first one, if multiple mpg's were burned as data.
