you seen bus passes now a days? cost of gas made public transportation go up as well.

back on topic......... here's another one, i am sure neph can appreciate..

old lady drives in today, 02 ford escort, making a loud noise while running. right away, i knew it was rod knock. checked the oil level, nothing on the dipstick, 42,325 miles on the ticker... last oil change was due over 20k miles ago. i told the lady she needed an engine, i thought she was gonna pass out on me there for a second. i yanked the valve cover, there must have been 2 inches of caked up oil/sludge built up on the bottom of the cover, not to mention all over the rocker arms and top of the cylinder head. needless to say, she has no money.... her reply, and i quote "your supposed to change the oil often?"

what a moron.....
she left with the engine knocking, and $78 bucks shorter.
people sometimes are just oblivious to their cars... but, it keeps me in business..

omg my first care 98 ford escort bought it when it's 50k and all these time i took good care of it, guess what the axel failed when it reaches 99k and i paid like $900 to fix it. about a month later 101k the transmission failed, so i just junked. also normally when i drove in the car when i brake this thing start trembling it was a terrible experience with ford.

i swear i'm not buying a ford anymore.

stop hoping, start loving.

Speaking of sludge, a couple months back we had a guy bring in an '03 Volvo S60 and the guy had put like 140k on it in two years which is no big deal - if you change the oil. He didn't and the whole engine was gummed up just like you described. The real kicker is the idiot obviously spent alot of time and money on the interior and exterior of the car because they were both absolutely spotless. Go figure.

Then last week we had some bonehead (had to be some stinky wannabe hippy) bring in an '03 VW Beetle Turbo - not a cheap car! Well, I look inside the thing and every, and I mean every, part of the interior was covered in some sort of beverage residue, filth and dog hair. There was trash and junk filling up the entire floor of the car and there was about an 1/8" layer of dust all over the dash. I can't for the life of me understand how someone could let a car get to that point. I'd have been too embarassed to even bring the car into a shop!

my personal fav is when they bring in the car and the stereo is on full blast....... or they have some gay ass shit playing on the radio. or the rims and tires are worth more then the car itself !
you get to see some interesting stuff in people's cars.
let alone the trunks and glove boxes..... not that i snoop, but sometimes you have to open the glove box to look for insurance cards, wheel lock keys, receipts from previos repairs.........
sometimes you have to put on a rubber glove to look around !

My everyday driver is a 98 Escort with an auto trans. I change the oil (with Mo1 5w-30) every 3k miles and change the tranny fluid (drain and fill only) again with Mo1, also every 3k miles. I've gone through this routine with every Ford I've owned and I EASILY get 300k+ miles out of the engine and trans. The car before this one (a T-bird) lasted me 375k before I wrecked it.

 It's all in the maintenance

No kidding. Last month a guy drops off his Chevy truck for a rotate so my buddy opens the glove box to find the lug lock and lo and behold a whole stack of pics fall out. They just so happen to be a bunch of home beaver shots of some twenty something girl who was very nicely appointed! I wanted to take the pics and see if the guy had the balls to come back and ask for them :) Funny thing was, the best pic of them all was rather worn :P

No thunder Mort ;)

I work for Purcell Western States Tire. It's been a good outfit to work for although the particular shop I work at is about 150 years old and has seen better days but I just prefer to say it has "character" :P

On another note I did a single loose tire that was brought in yesterday and the guy was replacing a 355/85R16 (37/14.00) Toyo Open Country with a new one. $350 for one of those stupid tires and the guys truck probably only gets 6 mpg trying to turn four of those damn things. I thought I was going to suck a nut trying to get that monster onto the tire machine. Some people think the damnedest things look cool......................

where you at anyway gstar?? you near neph i take it?
btw, liked the reply you made a while back (cant remember where exactly) it was about you changing your name and post count did not matter, and you wanted to be known for helping, not status..
loved it.

lord knows we have quite a few 'members' in here posting away to get a status mark next to their name. but thats off topic and he a thread for it anyway.

now back on topic....

got this guy in here with a 04 F150, wants dual exhaust, talking all kinds of shit that he does all this himself, has been doing it for years and such, telling me about back pressure and such, but when i go to tell him the benifits of dual exhaust, he has this glazed over look in his eyes like he is lost. then he tells me he has calculated his horsepower gains and fuel savings already..... which by the way i asked him if he wanted a job, due to his skills and knowledge, he looked at me and laughed, knowing full and well i was being sarcastic. anyway, he declined, (like i'd give him one anyway) just as then he went off saying now he wanted a true dual exhasut on his pick up, i told him i was a 4x4 and the room for true dual exhaust was not there.... he said, oh its easy, you split the pipe off the catalytic convertor and run it this way....... when i took him under the truck, he was amazed at how little room was under there.... he said nothing more, but, oh well.... i dont want it now!!

Thats funny. What benefit will he get splitting it behind the catalytic converter anyway, not much.

this guy comes in today with a 99 BMW 740 series, catalytic convertor has become loose in case and rattling, wants a quote to fix it. well, we called BMW just to see how much, it comes as the whole assembly, $1,800 dollars our cost.... needless to say, he asked for an alternative repair, i told him i could weld on an aftermarket cat (2x) for about 500 bucks out the door, he said it was too expensive, yet he's driving this $75k car, at least had a $5k stereo system installed and $6k worth of chrome spinners and tires.......... my guess, all his money went to all that fancy a55 flash and crap and has no money to maintain his expensive euro car....

the dual platinums are good for more or less 100k miles, i have seen some that are around 80k miles, but the owner was a lead foot, so they were worn more then normal. but the plugs you have should normally last about 60k under normal driving conditions. since you have that vortec, do you know if its CFI injection or MPI injection?
the CFI injection models were known for having bad spider packs and leaking fuel internally. (expensive repair too)
if the back 2 are burning more then the rest (#'s 5&6) i would suspect one of two things......... either you are running premium fuel or you have a bad spider pack..... but not limited to a few bad plug wires (cross arcing) or the plugs may be too cold for that model.
but without looking at it for myself or running a cylinder balance test, its hard to diagnose over the net......
