hehe i asked the same question not long ago, to first be able to ftp your xbox you need to unlock your xbox HDD and you need it to either have a modchip in it or be softmodded to be unlocked. so yes sorry you do need action replay but you can do it all for free
ie. make your own action replay device its not to tricky
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/218506
good tutorial and has a link to instructions on how to make your own action replay device gl

WOW!!! you NEED to have your xbox hdd unlocked before you can FTP, that's a first. So then my question to you is why then can i FTP into my xbox that isn't modded at all and not unlocked? humm i wonder? You my friend need to read more before giving someone else what i would call "False" advice.

No you cannot just FTP into a xbox right from the start or else modding would be very easy and MS would lose a lot of money. You can use a exploit to get started on softmodded, but if you are wanting to go on xbox live as well i would suggest just getting a modchip, because with a softmod you have to load it up, then when you want to go onto xbox live you have to uninstall it completely (From what i understand if you can prove that i'm wrong by either someone actually trying it or yourself getting on it then awesome i still wouldn't advise it). As opposed to a modchip where you can just turn it on or off and your safe, you can have it with a little light or something to indecate when it's on or off to insure you don't get banned from xbox live. There are a lot of programs that will run on a mac for xbox use and other things but at the same time there are somethings that you won't be able to run. But to just connect via FTP and have a Modded and unmodded xbox (for xbox live) then your pc type really doesn't matter a lot since it will be on your xbox. It's your decision i just hope that cleared it up so you don't unlock your hdd when your xbox is softmodded and then you it won't boot up lol.

Maybe, maybe not, having your mod chip disabled and running the default ms dash isn't full proof. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=335984 I've been banned a few times and I never had my chip enabled.

Bohefus & Degallle are both 100% correct.
The only way to be completely sure you will not get banned from LIVE (because of a modded hdd) is to play with a completely unmodified xbox.
3rd party options are available but it's not the same:
XB Connect & X-Link-Kai

yeah see, theres really no way to play on XBL with mods. even if they are turned off, Microsoft can have a look into your hard drive to see if anything looks suspicious.

hi. i have looked at alot of guides about xbox modding. i am going to do a softmod. from what you are saying a unmodifyed xbox cannot be ftped. ok. so the only way to ftp is using a modded xbox(softmodded or modchip) . now you can not soft mod a xbox without unlocking the hard drive with a "flash". i ,up to recently thought you could flash the hard drive though ftp. so i need to flash the hard drive another way. i have come accross some info about using 007 agent under fire. there is a special save (that i have) that needs to be put on a memory card. then just load the save into 007. i have this down so far. i think it is all right. this "special save" does it contain the "flash" to unlock the hard drive, or is it just a prep to install the new dash boards?

If you are doing a softmod DO NOT unlock your hard drive! Thats the most retarted thing to do on the planet! THE FIRST THING TO DO once your xbox is softmodded is to BACKUP THE EEPROM.BIN FILE. Once you do that then u can be a dumbass as much as you want, but at least you can fix your xbox if u screw it up. I REPEAT, BACKUP YOUR EEPROM.BIN! I've seen way to many ppl with paperweights b/c they negelcted the importance of backing up the eeprom.

You don't "flash" a hard drive. You either flash the xbox's TSOP, or you flash the modchip. If you want the best way to softmod you xbox, get Krazie's UXE Pack from Xbins. It's in XBOX>EXPLOITS>_PACKAGES or sumthing like that. Make sure u get the package that corresonds for the game! example: you have splintercell NTSC, get Krazie's SC-NTSC UXE package.

Ok so if I've softmaodded, do I have to flash the tsop? and if so, do I have to unlock the hdd first?

The answer to both your questions is no. Of course, the first one cancel the other. If you've softmodded your xbox, the very next thing you need to do is what tim1210 said, back up your EEPROM.

ok so i have what was once a fantastic xbox, lots of utilities, evox config magic, xdvd no dongle, n64, too many to list, except the dirty disk errors. I mean, I can't rip a disk, I can't play an original. Should I get a new dvd drive? Will that fix it? it's a 1.0 so no surprise the laser doesn't read. It's been thoroughly used.

Using a lens cleaner can be risky but try cleaning out the E Drive's CACHE files. If that doesn't work, maybe you can borrow a friends disc drive just to see and that may pinpoint your problem to the drive and then yeah, purchase one cheap online.

FTP into your xbox...
Go to E:Drive/Cache/in here are the cache files, delete them...
Restart and try a game disc.

You're a genius! I played an original disk for quite a while but did eventually get the dirty disk error again. It's definitely an improvement however as I couldn't rip or play any disk before. I also ripped and played a backup without getting any error. Thanks.

OVERSTATEMENT!! but thank you.
If you're still have issues make sure that your dashboard has the latest BIOS installed as well your chip (if it has a chip). You might even try using a different dash. I would recommend any others than AvaL & EvoX but whatever works for you and is error free I'm sure is the answer. ;)

Well I just got Conker live and reloaded and the original plays but the rip is giving me a dirty disk error now. The opposite of what timesplitters was doing. the original wouldn't play but rip gives me no trouble.
I have a v. 1.0 softmodded and have been warned strongly against playing with the bios. I'm thinking since the system is so old, I might get a new drive. Would that remedy the dirty disk errors completely or what?
