Have you updated your dvd writer's firmware to the latest version? How many RAM of Memory do you have? When you said; "just very painfully slow..." How slow/how long does it take to successfully completed a burn? Are you using the net, have any other programs/softwares running while burning? What are your computer specs?

firmware is up to date
512 Ram
Painfully slow takes anywhere from 2 - 4 hours depending how lucky i am, and this is when i close all the programs that i can.
I have a pentium 4, 2.4 ghz laptop
my hardrive is 40 gb and i defragged it not too long ago, but i also just formatted it yesterday

I just went back to the start of this thread looking to see if this had been asked before and I don't see it. Have you checked to see if your USB port is USB1 or USB2. If for some reason it is running on USB1 it will take forever to backup a dvd if it even works at all and probably will cause the buffer problem you have. Just another suggestion.

Seriously, everything looks ok to me, and it shouldn't never take you 2 - 4 hours just to back up and have a successful burned. Especially, you've just reformatted your hard drive <-- this should be free of virus, trojans, etc.
I think you have some DMA issues, perhaps, it has turned into PIO or Off instead of DMA is On/Available. Other than that, I'm as clueless as you are now at this point.

the last thing i can think of is this.
whenever i check my dma's both of them are on ... but neither of them is for my external dvd-writer, one of them is for my hard drive and the other my laptop cd burner.
now whenever i check where my dvd burner is it's under the Intel (R) 82801DB Ultra ATA Storage Controller - 24CB.
now when i go to properties under that there is no advance settings tab for the DMA settings.
this is all just very weird considering it worked fine 3 weeks ago

Here is another way you can check your DMA to see if it's On beside going to Hardware and Device Manager. If you have Nero Tool Kit, check to see the following:
** Open up "Nero ToolKit"
** click on "Nero Info Tool" (this will retrieve all drivers)
** then click on "Configuration" (this will show you all of your Drivers and its specifications)
** now check to make sure all of their DMA is on.

Hi guys,
Not trying to barge in by any means but DMA only applies to IDE or SATA configured drives. DMA doesn't apply to external drives that are configured through USB or firewire.

There isn't too much left to try. Possibly defective ram or the drive itself. If possible, try the external drive on a friends computer and see how it works there.

As Jerry746 suggest try it on another computer and see if it works, or if it has a firewire connection try that.

Yes..... you are correct. However, I just want to check his other drives DMA settings that's basically.
Seriously, I don't know what else to suggest if he's already reformatted the hard drive. He's got fairly decent processor (P4), 2.4GHz with 512 RAM. With the specs he stated, it should never took him 2 - 4 hours to do a burning using Nero. I suspect there is a possibility that there's a hardware issue going on or the USB cable is loose somewhere, possibly a bad USB cable.

That kind of takes us back to a possible problem with the computer itself. Possibly the ram is acting up as I stated before. If you can find out what motherboard is in the laptop, check to see if there are any updates for it. You already formated the HD and reinstalled the system so that should be good. Although USB ports are pretty basic see if there is any type update for the ports. Not much left.

hi
have we checked aspi layer? maybe a motherboard upgrade on the chipset? like via 4in1 or intel chip drivers, go to website and update them!
i had the same buffer probs but my drive is internal and it was my hard drive that needed wiping and fresh format / defragging
Nothing here to see, move along folks.
