I have been on the Forum numerous times, I have downloaded "Scuba Petes" fix-all, I have downloaded mumerous pieces of info And I cannot get it to copy. On every movies ( at least 9) that I have tried to copy - everyone is too large acording to the Decrypter Program listing? I am absolutely sure that some of the movies are less tham 90 min.long and do not exceed the "Size" parameter. Most state a size of between 7,500,000kb and 8,500,000kb. THe latest movie ( State of the Union ) is 101 min. long and Decrypter shows a size of 8,339,840kb? It sems to be almost double what the actual size should be. I followed a download entitled "DVD Decrypter" using "iso" then "Read" etc. but size defeats me. I know this movie is encrypted with the "Sony" screen protection, they usually don't work but I'm trying to Decrypt and use "DVD Shrink" to copy. Since. It's already over size I guess it won't work again. I'll try any way. Any suggestions??? ronnies

After you use Decrypter you need to use Shrink to compress and encode your file to fit onto a single layer disk. The file will be this size after it is decrypted. Use Shrink in re-author mode and just do movie only, and then burn. Here is a guide

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/backup%20with%20Decrypter&Shrink.pdf

If you follow this you should be able to backup your movie. I use Decrypter and Shrink for this movie. Try ripping in file mode and then open the file with Shrink. File mode is a much better choice when doing ARccOS protected movies then iso mode.

What you want to do is use DVD Decrypter and rip it in:
Mode-File
Allow it to rip to hard drive

Now you need DVD Shrink to compress it,so:

Open up dvd shrink
Open file
Locate the mds file for that movie and click on it.proceed to re-author if desired.

My personal setup, I rip with DVD Shrink and allow it to auto burn with Nero or DVD Decrypter. It'll handle about 90% of the movies, but has trouble on the sony arcoss encryption.AnyDVD by slysoft is a background ripper and will pull off the newer encryptions.

Open up dvd shrink/Edit/Preferences/File I/O tab: Make sure the burn setting box is unticked if you are burning with DVD Decrypter instead of Nero.

Insert original/open up dvd shrink/re-author if desired/double check your backup options/as soon as you hit ok,then your process begins.

No mds when ripping in file mode only in iso mode.

Hello Arniebear and Saugmon, I am just having a terrible time with the "Decrypter to The Shrink." I did find two files located in "MY Documents" after one DVD Decrypter episode. An "mds" file and a "rar" file. I tried Shrink but I only had the"rar" file, I didn't load the "mds" file because I wasn't aware it had to be there and also I didn't know how to load both files.. I do not know what "authoring" does so never used that either. I downloaded the "Download" that you had in your thread. I cannot figure out how to Get my Decrypted movies from DVD Decrypter into "DVD Shrink". This is a real problem for me. I see that there is debate on "ISO Mode" and "File Mode". Which way do I go? I have put lots of time into this seemingly endless series of problems, I really hope that I can get something to work someday, it won't be for lack of Help from the Forum... Ronnies

The majority of original dvds are dvd-9's,therefore have to be compressed-via DVD Shrink. For these DVD-9 movies, use file mode.

Smaller DVD-5 movies like napoleon dynamite and the majority of b movies you can use DVD Decrypter in ISO read and ISO write. You can also do DVD-9 movies onto dual layer media with ISO read and ISO write.

I downloaded the "Download" that you had in your thread.
Would that be the download for the free trial of AnyDVD?

If it is,it's a very fine ripper and you don't really have to do anything.Just make sure you have the little fox icon in your lower tray, then you know it is working.

Since the majority of original dvds are DVD-9,I just cut out the DVD Decrypter step and use DVD Shrink, then let it auto-burn with Nero or DVD Decrypter.

Look at my first post for my personal setup:
Open up DVD Shrink,preference/file-I/O and make sure enable burn with Nero is unticked.

Insert original disc to be ripped
Open up dvd shrink
Allow it to do the quick analyzation/if it doesn't,activate anydvd
It then opens up to your dvd files

Click re-author if you want-drag main movie from right side to left side, click backup.
If you don't reauthor, just click backup tab on top of screen.

That's your backup options. You have 5 tabs. From left tab to right:

Target device tab:- On top you have select backup target-make this your DVD-RW drive.
Just below target device,is your temporary files.Place them where you want if you want to make extra copies.

Dvd Region tab: Just tick region free.

Quality settings tab:,Untick these if you reauthor to start with. These come in handy for highly compressed DVD-9 movies onto DVD-5 blanks when backing up entire disc.

Options tab: Tick backup in low priority mode.

Burn settings tab: Keep burn speed at 4x max to start.

After you double check all those backup options, click ok and the process should start to analyze-if the enhancements were used, encode to your harddrive,-sptits out the original, insert blank, and then auto burn with DVD Decrypter or Nero-whichever you have ticked in the preference/file I/O tab i stated earlier.

That'll get you started till you expirament with the quality enhancements and deleting unnecessary audio streams/sub pictures/and directors commentary crap.

thanks Saugmon, that was very informative and sxplicit. Two things - 1) I downloaded both "Anydvd" and "dvd43" - separately, of course, and after downloading each one, on my initial attempt - A blue screen came up and crashed. I tried each one, separately, again and though both got past the "Sony" encryption but during the encoding I got an error message and that was the end of my trial with both of those programs. I think I've got a compatibility problem.
2) what is "Authoring"? what funcion does it do or accomplish? Why or when would I need it?
Saugmon, thank you again for your very definitive response and extra effort that you did for me. Thanks Again Ronnies

Anydvd should give you a 21 day free trial. DVD43,I haven't gotten that on my 2 pcs,but it was on my broken pc.

Reauthor tab: This is to help reduce the compression in DVD Shrink. The more compression, the lower the quality of your backup. I do main movie only.Sometimes you may have 2 main movies like Beauty Shop.If you have 2 main movies, drag the first one to the left of screen, click on the viewer and see what it looks like.Beauty shop had wide screen and full screen main movies.I chose full screen.

You also have a tab with 2 arrows, one pointing right and the other arrow pointing left.Click that tab and you'll be able to set your start frame and ending frame. This can also reduce you compression.

I untick all audio channels except for AC3 5.1-Ch English. That is the main stream I need. By unticking the rest, including sub pictures and directors commentary, this will reduce compression a little.

NOTE: When you reauthor, you lose all menu functions.Place your backup in a stand alone and it auto-plays,which is a nice feature. No trying to find the remote.

When your movie is opened up in DVD Shrink, click on that compression tab and look at the number it says.If it is 100,then no compression is needed. The lower that number, the higher the compression. The higher compression is when the extra enhancements in the adaptive error compensation like max smoothness and max sharpness. Those enhancements are in the backup options. Those options will slow you down.

When you reauthor? Take dvds like Lord of the Rings. Some are too large for DVD Shrink to run through. You'll see red in the bar on top which is no good. You can either use a dual layer disc, place that movie on 2 blank dvds, run it through DVD Shrink twice,or re-author to cut out some stuff to fit standard DVD-5 blank disc. These blank DVD-5 discs will only hold approximately 4.38 gigs on them, not the 4.7 gigs that they state!

It also saves time. The more compression performed, the longer it takes to encode to your hard drive.Highly compressed movies can cause playback issues on stand alone players.

Saugmon, Thanks you so much for the time and effort that you have put into this for me, I truley appreciate your wisdom.
I believe, from your explanation, that "Authoring means to adjust or crop movies basically. If I am not going to make a movies shorter or adjust it's compression number, I could just leave it alone....
Is this what you implied? Also, How would I know if I have a DVD-9 movie or not, I trust this does cause me to pursue a movies in a different manner if it is a DVD9 movie or a DVD5 movie?
Usually I can use just "DVD Shrink" and it does it all. burns - the works. It works about 85% of the time. I cannot copy any movie with the "Sony" encryption ( the whole movie screen appears from the get go ). The "Seinfeld series is typical of the "Sony" thing. Some movies, recently will not even start to encode and they are not encrypted, at least according to the write out prior to starting to encode. Don't know what's going on there? In any case I just downloaded all of your responses because I value them and maybe - just maybe I will get through the "DVD Decrypter" and put it to rest.
Thanks again, Saugmon for being a good guy.. Ronnies

Sony arcoss encryption: With the combinition of ripping with DVD Shrink, you'll get a crc:Cyclitical redundacy check error on the initial analyzation. This same error use to mean dirty disc or damagaged disc. Now it can also mean that sony encryption. Activate AnyDVD and it should allow you to rip it.

Columbia Pictures is another one to watch out for. They like to use the encryption of a little boy with green shorts jumping around. They also have something different that screwed up one of my backups at the very beginning of the grudge.I set the unreferenced files to still image, and when I re-author,I cut out the lady liberty icon on all columbia pictures on my start frame.

Dvd-9's are more common. You have to go through DVD Shrink to compress them,so that is why I skip the decrypter step. I prefer DVD Decrypter for making extra copies when needed in my single drive-spare pc.It's a lot quicker in that set up using iso read and iso write.I also started doing my dual layer media using iso read and write.

Hello Saugmon: I see you refering to "AnyDVD". I tried this and it "Blue screened" my computer during my first try. It did work after that but I got error messages that I can't continue? Is there any way that I can get "AnyDVD" to function with my computer? "DVD Shrink" works fine and, at least, I can get "DVD Decryprter" to function and not crash my computer...
Thanks Saugmon, Ronnies

I agree with Saugmon. I typically use Shrink to analyze when dealing with really scratched up disks, but with AnyDVD in background I have no troubles with many of the programs. I have been so impressed with CloneDVD 2 and Intervideo copy3 for the quality that I really never use shrink. Not knocking it at all, just enjoy these other progs better. My favoritwe still has to Rebuilder Pro.CCE but it takes more time, but worth it for quality. I guess it comes down to WHY? I believe you want to make the best possible back-up that is possible. Just my thoughts.
Have a great day guys!

Blue screen of death: I had lots of them up until my pc fried a month ago.Blue screens and Black screens/reboots.It always did it during the advanced error compensation enhancements on the analyzing/encoding to my hard drive.Without that max smoothness or max sharpness enhancement,it would run great.

Try running a registry scan and see what it comes up with.

Hi Saugmon: I just performed a "Registry scan" found 40 entrys that I deleted. I read That "MovieDud", another "After Dawn" constituent, said that he runs "AnyDVD" in the background and has no problem with it? He also mentioned "Clone DVD2" and "Intervideo copy3" I have "Intervideo - windvd and intervideo winddvd 5" installed on my computer. They came with a "Plextor" VHS to DVD converter thatI use.
Have you ever tried any of the other two that "MovieDud" is speaking of? Since "AnyDVD" bluescreened me on the first try the last incident, Do you think it advisable to try it again? I believe I read that "AnyDVD" was not compatible with "Intervideo"? It seemed to work with "Movie Dud" whats your assessment? Ronnies
Can't seem to beat that "Sony" encryption".....

I've got windvd5/full updated version of anydvd/dvd shrink/dvd decrypter/nero 6.0.0.21b/my sonic dvd software that i rarely use.No trouble in this and my old 598 mhz machines.

I usually de-activate AnyDVD unless I run into the sony encryption.

Make a note of the exact message from the blue screen of death, maybe someone like ddp can solve it.

Here is the info from Slysoft on the BSOD and AnyDVD
Quote:
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

My PC shuts down with a bluescreen!

Please activate the 'safe-mode' in AnyDVD. AnyDVD then uses a compatibility mode. Software from Pinnacle and InterVideo may not work when AnyDVD uses the 'safe-mode'.
I usually do not run AnyDVD all the time, I just enable it when it is needed. But I did have problem on my system using AnyDVD with Intervideo and that is one of the reasons I did not buy the program.

@ronnies

Hope that I am not covering anything that has already been covered, but I know you are asking a lot of questions regarding AnyDVD. I purchased both AnyDVD and CloneDVD (got them before the $10 discount) and I use these 2 programs almost exclusively -- at least 95% of the time. I have only had 1 coaster since I started using them and I caused the coaster by multi-tasking (DUH!). I do not have Intervideo, but I do have Shrink/Decrypter and I have used both successfully. Hope some of this helps you. Good Luck.

Newbie here. I just replied privately to arniebear's PDF post. I'm still trying to find my way around the forum so hopefully this is going out to everyone.
I'm using (trying to use) Memorex 8X DVD+R--no luck. I can't remember the error message I get--I'll have to check it again when I get home tonight. But can someone recommend some DVD media they're using that works well for them? If it matters, I have an HP 100i DVD-RW burner.
Arniebear, I think your PDF guide mentioned something about using a good DVD-ROM drive rather than your burner. Can you recommend one? And is this a standalone unit? That might be a stupid question, but I'm still learning. :-)
Last question--I'll be buying a new computer soon--please give rec's on how much RAM, minimum processor speed, and any other input on what I should build this computer with. It's mainly for burning DVD's.
Thanks a bunch to anyone who can help!
Chris

I recommend the Lite-on 167T for a DVD-Rom it is fast and dependable and you can get on at WalMart for about 25.00 or online from http://www.newegg.com. IMO using a DVD-Rom saves some life on your burner, it does not have to work as hard. If you are buying a new computer make sure you get a minimum of 512mg or ram preferably 1gb. As for processor I am a Pentium fan, my previous computer and my laptop have AMD processors and sometimes they can be a little flaky, but that is just my opinion. Right now I have a Dell with a gig of ram, a 2.8 Pentium processor and run a 167T Rom, a HP640C internal burner and two external burners, a NEC 1300a and a Plextor 716UF. All run fine and burn great.

Just about anything other than memorex, LOL

I get my media through local on sale ads like office depot/staples/and wal-greens.All under 40 cents each for sale, which is same as when they have memosux on sale. Look those wrappers and labels over good for these words: MADE IN JAPAN!
This usually works on maxell/sony/tdk/and fuji.Japan makes the finest media. Most of the time spindles will be all mixed up with both taiwanese and japanese.Just fish around for the Japanese ones-for the same price.

That lite-0n 167t is sweet! It reads discs that my benqs don't recognize.

512 mbs ram,but 1 gig helps.

New burner: How about the benq 1640! I've got 2 1620s and they are capable of booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom so I get near perfect compatability on stand alones/pc drives/and ps2 consoles. The features of the 1640 are mouth watering,-I'm drooling, LOL
