 Have you looked at the CC Sony discs? Are they MIJapan or MITaiwan? I can't remember the last time I had a Sony coaster .. On my short list of prefered media, they're #2 right behind Verbatim

No, I haven't looked at the CC, but the 25 packs are made in Taiwan, interestingly, the 50 packs ARE made in Japan and carry Taiyo Yuden code. I see No difference in quality between the 2. I'll look at the CC on the Taiwan Sony's & post back. Hey, for $8.99 for 25, They Rock!

 I'm not sure what the 'Sony D11' signifies (Sony's kinda secretive about their codes), but my LVW-5005 recorders like them more than the Yudens

 B u t . . . The LVW-5005s absolutely adore the Verbatim discs, dosen't matter what speed those dudes are rated at

 Now as far as my Ricoh burner, surprise, surprise, it loves any brand that is coded RICOHJPN

I'll say this, my LG burners do Great with either the Taiwan Sony's or The Japan ones, but the Japan Yaiyo Yuden ones just have a better "feel" to them. A "Quality" feel so to speak! And my LG burners Adore Verbatims too! TDK s as well. My LG burners are the New Multi-Format drives. DVD-RAM Drives. That said, I pretty much stick with what I know works for me. Noteworthy, I DO keep my Firmware up to date. With the newer media out there, I feel this is pretty important. Can I get a "Yes it is" on that? By the way, yeah, Sony is a little secretive about their media codong, BUT, I am thinking maybe Verbatim could have made the D11 ones in Taiwan?

@bunnyrip

"yes it is" on that...Heheheh...regarding the firmware being vital to keeping your burns steady and strong; with all the newer media nowadays, keeping the firmware up to date to recognize the faster rated ones is VERY important.

as for Verbatim making the so called "sony coding", i doubt it, BUT, there IS always that possibility~ :)

@aabbccdd

no, i have never had such a thing happen to me...i've gone through thousands of burns and never had a "RING" appear on the TOP side of the disc...either you got yourself some SUPER DUPER POWERFUL laser in your burner or something internally is misaligned (in your burner). :)

don't know how that ring was caused ON THE SHINY SILVER side..that is VERY peculiar...never seen it before and it has never happened to me...crazyyyyyyyyy stuff~

well i have an idea what happened
my guess it hung in the burner and the laser finally wore a ring around the disc which discolored it also .guess i know my Plextor burner and my power supply are good enough huh lol
heres a thread that might explain why you need a good machine to rip and copy dvds

Rant Mode on)

It has been my Considerable Experience (Well Over 1,000 perfect DVD Burns in the last 3 years) that even the Low Grade Media, and the Very Low Priced Burners, will perform satisfactorily (producing disks that will last for many years) if the Computers Power Supply is putting out enough 5 volt Wattage to keep the burners Laser Beam Hot and Consistent through out the entire burning process.

It has also been my Considerable Experience, as a person who Builds Computers from scratch, that 95 percent of the Power Supplies that come with Factory Built Computers, and Bare Bones Kits, are not nearly powerful enough to keep a DVD Burners Laser Hot Enough for consistently satisfactory burns. They may say 450 or 500 watts, but the Current Required (Amps) that the 5 Volt Leg needs to run the DVD Burners Laser just isn't there. You need a power supply that will allow your system to pull 220 to 240 Watts on the + 5 Volt Leg (minimum) to keep everything (all systems) consistent during the burning process. Anything less and even the best burner, with top grade media, is going to suffer.. If you keep that Laser Hot, your bargain basement media will burn satisfactorily.

I burn middle grade media at its Top Rated Speed, with Printed Paper Labels applied before I burn the disks, and I very, very seldom have a bad burn. All disks are burned with Nero, and each and every burn is "Verified" after completeion. Economy Brand media that I burned three years ago (with and without papler labels) still plays perfectly!

Closing words: I have fixed a LOT of other folks DVD burning problems just by changing their computer power supply for them.

(End Rant)

I seen this happen a couple of times don't know why, as you stated the burner just hung. It happened to me with Xcopy, and it happened to a friend with Dectypter. I just chalked it up to a miscommunication between drive and program.

I still scratch my head of that post, I will forever remember it as the hot laser thread.

@aabbccdd

I am still redoing those old Xcopy backups, my newer players hate them, that pause screen drives them nuts. Can't believe people are still buying it and at the price they are charging.
