I just got NEC 3540A burner and am using TY DVD+R media with Nero Ultra. Although I am new to DVD burning, I believe this is the best combo. I haven't had a single problem with burning DVD's, but the main issue is that DVD Shrink takes egregiously long to encode DVDs. For example, 107 minutes long DVD takes 2:20 hours from the beginning all the way to having a ready burned DVD. This includes Detailed Analysis and High Quality "Smooth" setting. The "Extra Smooth" takes as long as 4 hours! So my question is whether the duration is normal or too long. If it is too long, what can I do to shorten it (besides lowering the quality)? I'm using XP and have 256MB ram + 1.90 GHz speed. I'd appreciate your comments.
Also, what is the deal with "1Click DVD Copy"? Is it really the absolute best software?

XP SP2
512MB RAM
Pentium IV CPU 1.80GHz
NEC 3540A

BEST QUALITY DVD BURNING (in order of function):
1) AnyDVD 5.4
2) DVD Decrypter
3) DVD Rebuilder 1.00RC60Pro
4) CCE SP
5) Nero 6.6 Ultra

i have the same problem with shrink, just way too slow. i've tried averything that experts have suggested with no luck. when it comes to 1click dvd copy, i have it i wouldn't say that it is the best but i tell you one thing, if you set 1click to main movie-only, one audio only. it will give you a quality output as good as any of the so called best programs. so i have been using it a lot lately. i just can't deal with the time shrink is taking to encode a movie.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

The max smoothness and max sharpness slow adaptive error compensation enhancements will definitely slow you down. I only use them if the compression tab in DVD Shrink shows lower than 70. This means it is being compressed at 30%.

Being limited to 1.9 ghz and 256 mbs of ram, that sounds about normal when using those adaptive error compensation enhancements.

Add more ram
Faster processor
Disable all background programs: Run/misconfig/startup/disable all
Defrag your hard drive
Keep spyware and viruses off your pc.

Dvd shrink will run your processor at max on the analyzing and encoding.

You can also re-author in dvd shrink/main movie only/AC3 5.1-ch English stream only.Set start frame and end frame to cut out credits.

The main movie only will definitely speed you up,but you lose the menu function. The higher the compression, the longer it takes to encode without the adaptive error compensation.Add that adaptive error compensation enhancement, that backup process time will really be magnified. The quality will be effected, but everyone has their own quality standards.

If you're looking for a transcoder that is very fast and has excellent video quality I recommend Intervideo DVDCopy3. It doesn't have all the reauthoring features that shrink does but the video quality is superior to shrink IMO and it is much faster. It has a 21 day free fully functional trial. Give it a go. Here's the link. http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp

I agree with saugmon inreference to your system. This might be a time when additional ram, processor change could help. I have a system like saugmon windows xp (sp2) AMD 64 3200+ 2.30 ghz. 160 internal GB HD (160 External GB Seagate HD). Dual DL Burners (Internal NEC and Extenal SOny). When I use shrink (I do not use it often!) for a 2 hr. movie with Deep Analysis, and High Quality (Extra Smooth) you are looking at 40 mins. then additional 18 minutes to burn. I have used 1 click before as well, I personally like Intervideo Copy 3 and CloneDVD 2 due to quality. Definitely make sure that nothing else is running in the background. Quality is the most critical for my backups.
Hope this helps!

Thank you for your comments. I will add another 256 and have a 512 ram. I can?t disable all the programs in the background b/c I am using the PC, especially when it takes an entire day to burn a single DVD! My drive is always defragmented and I also have an external Maxtor HD. Now the processor speed is another matter ? can I really update the processor to make it faster?
I also re-author DVD?s and often include only the main movie with a subtitle and two audios: LPCM 2-ch (I read that this is the best sound quality, even though 1GB) and AC3 5.1-ch.
The price doesn?t really matter since it is possible to crack almost any software (just like DVDs) and since you really think that InterVideo DVD Copy 3 yields the best quality, I?m going to get it. At 23mbs it?s sort of large though. Maybe I could then get rid of Nero, Shrink, and AnyDVD. 1Click DVD Copy was rated the best by several PC websites.

Here is a thread from Digital Digest on Encoding times and some solutions

http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=47035

When doing your backup it is better to keep the 5.1 soundtrack and throw out the 2 channel, being that on a lot of movies that is a directors commentary and can cause problems. Unless 2 channel is your only option. It would be wise to keep your AnyDVD as this works on breaking protection and is updated regularly and can be used with numerous programs. You will need it with Intervideo.

I wouldn't get rid of any of the proggys you mentioned. Although I seldom use shrink, I do use it sometimes to analyze and get a look at the dvd structure. Nero IMO is the best burning software and is always good to have on board. It is handy to use with DVDCopy3 since you can not control burn speed with copy3 but you can save the compressed folder from copy3 to a hdd folder and burn it with nero at whatever speed you choose. Anydvd is updated on a regular basis and will eventually be required to break encryptions on all new dvd's. If you're worried about to many proggys taking up room on your hdd I recommend adding another hdd. They are not very expensive anymore. 80 gb for around $55. 160 gb for around $75.

You can also rip the dvd to your hdd with dvd decrypter prior to useing DVDCop3 in most cases.

Thanks for the link. My Device Manager settings were all correct. The firmware version is also not bad - 1.01. I don't want to get a different firmware and void the warranty is I am not that good DVD's yet and can irreversibly screw up my burner.
By the way, my intervideo gold is cracked and ready to go. I'm going to restart and burn a DVD. Let's see if it's as good as you say.
