Does anyone have a tutorial or any links that give the steps it takes to transfer files recorded on my tivo to my PC. Its an older Direct TV TiVo (maybe version 2) and I just started up again with them and plan on making some DVDs from shows and movies I record. I have searched this forum and to no avail... maybe I missed something. Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.
don't know how relative this is, but I have a first-gen replayTV unit, and I can take out the hard drive, pop it in my computer, then run a basic program I got off the internet which basically just copies the mpeg-2 files to my computer. I would think that there's something similar for tivo as well
I don?t know about the other software mentioned but - If and when you get TiVo, here is the way to archive the hard disc files. After you get TiVo, you may have to wait about three business days to get TiVo Togo and connect it with you computer. Download and install Tivo Desktop on your computer and download the shows you want to archive or burn DVDs of. The files will be .tivo files and to make files that will play on any DVD player, convert them to .wmv files with EtiVo DirectShow Dump go here to get it. http://prish.com/etivo/tbr.htm you may want to convert them to .AVI or .mpeg to make DVDs.
This process takes a lot of time downloading and converting, etc. However, I have found a back door (Shshshsh don?t tell TiVo) ? you can archive in real time and burn a DVD of the files on your TiVo that will play on any DVD player. I use a Sony DVDirect VRDVC20 recorder connected to the TiVo with S-video connection as if it were a VCR. In the TiVo ?Now Playing List? Select a Program to record and Select ?Save to VCR?. Ready the Sony DVD Direct with a blank DVD and settings of your choice (quality, etc.)> Select ?Start saving from the beginning? and ?REC? button on the Sony DVD Direct. When the program is over stop the recording and Finalize the DVD and that?s it. It is said that ?the record from RCA is not really a hack -- it's something people have been doing since the TiVo1 era. The problem is of course, that you don?t get a digital copy, but rather an analog one?. The person who said this is a top innovator with TiVo and I respect what he says, however using the Sony DVD Direct gives a terrific high quality DVD of the files from the TiVo hard disc.
I have a DirecTivo and a Sony VRD-VC20. I have been trying to do the exact same thing as what was described above (dump movies from my Tivo to DVD using the RCA or SVGA jack on the back of the Tivo). It will allow this transfer as long as the show is not a movie that was recorded from HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, TMC, etc. Broadcast TV programs have no problem. The premium channel movies won't record. The Sony recorder immediately stops recording once any of the movie starts playing. I can't help but think that it has something to do with copyright on thos movies. Maybe the Tivo records the signal from the premium channel that is recognized by the Sony as a copyrighted program, thus not allowing it to copy. Someone help.
What you?re saying is probably true. The manual for the Sony DVDirect will tell you that. I have none of the above channels. I have copied many movies off the regular channels. However, I use the TiVo to track shows that feature the staff from the Metropolitan Museum of Art (where I work) here in New York and art show from other museums and galleries. The technique for recording movies off the TV is to capture it with a $99 Pinnacle PVTV ? USB2 connection right from the TV to my hard disc with Pinnacle Studio 9 Plus to the DVDirect. It takes about seven hours to burn a two hour movie this way. I get my movies usually from Netflix and Blockbusters and copy them using AnyDVD (that works in real time when you?re encoding the video) (I think ? if I?m wrong please advise) then I use DVD Shrink v. 3.2 (use the great guide on AfterDawn) connected to DVD Decrypter. It makes a terrific two hour movie in lest than forty-five minutes and a copy of that movie in lest than five minutes after that. Watch the space on your hard drives and maintain them. You will have to use your manual for connections, etc.
There are other ways ? the man who wrote EtiVo as I stated above lets you convert them with EtiVo DirectShow Dump (go here) to get it. http://prish.com/etivo/tbr.htm you may want to convert them to .AVI or .MPEG2 to make DVDs. The Home site will have other ways to go that I do not understand how to use (I believe he is working on a version of EtiVo Web and EtiVo Service that will work with TiVo 7.2). Hope this help or gives you something to work with.

I have a dvd recorder connected to my Direct tv tivo. I record to DVD using save to vcr setup. This works fine. I use a DVD-RW so I can use disk over again.
