The manufacturer is absolutely no help at all! This laptop is a replacement for the one I first bought- the Better Business Bureau MADE them send me a replacement for the other one because I had to send it back 6 times within a year for various problems. Each time it would come back with a new problem. After the new one came I had to bing the old one to the shop to try to recover stuff that disappeared when transferringg files and he said ALL the problems that I was having were because there was a corrupt hard drive installed! He said that he was 99% sure that it either had a corrupt hard drive initially or they damaged it while "repairing" problems.
I have a folder in my file cabinet at work with over 235 emails from HP about that laptop. Almost each one suggests doing a full system restore to fix the problems- that's their customer service expetise- "do a full system restore to see if the problem was with the computer itself or if it was a different program causing the problem."

My suggestion is to call HP and tell them that...
They should take care of the problem or you will file a consumer complaint with the State District Attorney.
Believe me...it´s like walking on water...IT WORKS!!!
I think that HP is only good for printers and scanners.
Anyway that´s what I would do.

n0v0n,
I'm assuming that last post was to me. Anyway, this computer has been fine other than a problem with windows and now this. And with the windows problem I actually caught the HP customer service guy just cutting and pasting from the techsupportguys message board. I posted there asking about the problem before emailing them and their response was word for word what was suggested on the messageboard. Next email from them was simply the next suggestiong from the board. Finally I asked them if they know what they are doing or if they just troll message board looking for ideas that would make them sound semi-compitent. Got some BS about them using the message board to get further information to make sure their response was as sound as possible. LOL
ANd I need to be careful how I handle the old laptop situation because I never sent it back to them. They sent me the FedEx label to send it back but I told them that since they couldn't fix the problems and it was "against their policy" to recover files from the computer that I would need to keep it to try to recover the files that were lost because of their incompetence in fixing the problems. They said fine as long as I did it as quickly as possible. Well, over a month at a shop, about a month with a friend, a couple months of trying various programs suggested on message boards and I just "forgot" to sent it back. SO now my brother is looking into buying a new hard drive for it so he can buy it from me since it's a good computer other than the F'd up hard drive.

Could it be something with a windows update? I just looked through my add/remove programs and noticed a handful of automatic updates from 8/11 and that dates seems about right with when the problem started.

Time is not of essence. There are no parameters on ``HOW LONG´´ it take to take care of a problem.
If you sent your Notebook to HP it probably would take between 6 to 8 months to see it back on your desk.
NO STATUE OF LIMITATIONS!! Think like car manufacturers, they recall their products manufactured years ago.
My other suggestion would be to get an external 2.5 HD housing, remove the HD from your notebook and see if that works. They are not expensive.
If your notebook is still working (somehow) try to do the upgrades.
I also would uninstall all the unnecessary software on the notebook (make sure you have the original disks to reinstall later).
If all fails remove all the software (leave only WINDOWS XP) reinstall WINDOWS, do the upgrades, and see what happens.
Last scenario would be to reformat the hard drive completely and start fresh.
I believe that HP is like the other PROPRIETARY manufacturers. They have a recovery disk, try that also.
Let me know
P.S. There´s a consumer site on the internet where U can post your opinion about all the crap they sell us.
I have to find it.
As I said before...send an e-mail complaining about their product, tell them you will buy an add in a newspaper (doesn´t matter how much it costs).
...and watch the results...
REMEMBER...The customer is always right

I'm not following this: you want me to complain about HP even after the BBB made them send me a replacement? Doesn't make too much sense especially considering I never sent them back the old one. This problem most likely has soemthing to do with windows updates, or something of that nature. Unless the fans aren't working right- I don't see how this can be blamed on HP. And if it si the fans- it would be easier and cheaper in the long run to have the local computer shop replace them as apposed to sending it to HP and waiting the month or so it would take to send it back to me. In fact the fan "casing" on the back of my laptop is just screwed in- I'm tempted to open it up and see if the fans are dirty or something.
Trust me- If I thought this was HPs fault I'd be making a stink and contacting the BBB again but ike I said I higly doubt this can be blamed on HP. It's ONLY a DVDShrink issue evidentally- I'm going to keep looking through message boards to figure it out.
Thanks for the help though.

One more time, if YOU think it is a software issue.
Try uninstalling and than reinstalling.
Follow backwards the steps you took up to the time that the problem started.
Make sure you have all the updates in place for each of the softwares.
Sometimes the BBB can be of help, other time they are not. I usually go all the way to the top to get results. Please don´t feel sorry for HP...they already got your money.
Good luck

From the other board I found out how to disable auto-restart after the blue screen so I could see what the error message was. I don't have it offhand with me, but it appears to be the sound card that is causing that. The person helpign me there said there is an update for those drivers on the HP site so I'm going to do that tonight.
She also noticed that the DMA is disabled so we have to work on getting that fixed.
I did get brave this morning and did a systam restore to before the latest Windows Update and the DVD I tries after that went through analysis without problems- so that might have been it after all.
Thanks for all the help- I'll keep you posted.
One more thing- I tried using Speedfan to check the temp or the computer and the fans and it doesn't show the fans woring at all, has them both at 0 rpms and the comp tmeperates all at 102C. Is it possible for me to take the fans out myself to check them and replace them if necessary?

2talll,
You can change them yourself but since you have a laptop I would let a Mom and Pop shop change it or someone that really know what they are doing or you could send it back to the manuf(if you want to wait that long) . A desktop unit is easy but a laptop might present a problem

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I might open it up and see what it looks like and then decide. I'd have to go buy the fans anyway if the local place was to do it because I'd rather buy the fans myself and bring them rather than wait for him to get them since I doubt he'd have them lying around the shop.
