I've had a new computer with a DVD burner for a couple months now and have been using a lot of Memorex 16X DVD discs, and have read all the Memosux comments all over this forum. But I have yet to have a single problem with the Memorex DVD-R's that I have used, and I have probably used close to 100 by now. Have I just been extremely lucky thus far? Or can I just equate all the Memorex bashing to, say, Bush bashing, where many just blindly bash the product because of an intense hatred for Memorex? I am telling you dudes, I have not made a single coaster as of yet and all the DVD's that I have burned play on my home player with absolutely no problems. So what gives? Just curious.

consider yourself very fortunate~ :) depends on how you view "lucky" hehe, but, im glad to hear that SOMEONE is having success with Memosux, as i know for a fact i HAVE NOT been so lucky~
i bash on Memorex due to their CMC MAG discs being of poor quality, i did spend my money on Memorex back in the day only to have them degrade to non-playable status within 3 short months after burning them, they were the 8x DVD+R (not the 16x that you are using) but, that's not the point...
consider your success a blessing...good luck with your future burns, but if you DO start seeing some coasters/choppy playback, then do yourself a favor...go with Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim~ :) my 2 cents
Recommended Media:
Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

Just to satisfy my cat-like curiosity how 'bout running one of those Memorex discs through DVD Identifier .. A buddy of mine was given some 16x +R Memorex discs that coded out as DVD+R:MCC-004-000 which looks like Verbatim to me ...
http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/
But listen to kivory666 .. he's burnt more discs than you'd care to guess, and he knows what he's talking 'bout ? except you can add Sony and Maxell to the good stuff list ?

Used DVD Identifier on one of the Memorex 16X...came up CMC Mag AM3.
I guess I have been pretty lucky...I will probably start to switch to Verbs or MIJ Fujis, if I can find them. It seems all the brands carried by most of the local vendors...Best Buy, Comp USA, Staples, etc...are all made in Taiwan. Have not seen a MIJ on a package yet that I can remember.

@ catfreak
the MCC004s are some of my FAVORITE 16x Verbatim DVD+R format~(i equally like the 8x MCC003 and the 16x MCC003 both DVD+R verbatim) just another great Mitsubishi CHemicals Corp manufactured disc. :)
if i was assured those odds, like your friend with memorex, i would start buying them...but, we both know odds are NOT that good to get the MCC produced ones :)
@sacflies
i also agree w/ catfreaks suggestions on media as well~ we just have different preferences, as do MANY people around here, but, the sonys and maxells (which are available locally) are very good stuff too~
it really depends what part of the country you are in as all the local stores that carry dvd media vary, i have not found a "made in japan" Fuji 8x DVD-R TYG02 coding since the beginning of this year, they seem to be very rare now~ :) if you want Taiyo Yuden made discs...that's why i also recommend Verbatims, as MOST of them will be made in taiwan and are GREAT discs too~ readily available at any of the outlets you mentioned earlier...just wait for the sales and you will be good to go~ good luck~

@sacflies, many at the forum challenge others to stay away from bad media. Yes, you are lucky but there is always the issue of longevity. Will it hold up over the years? That is why many use some of the best media you can buy. The guys and gals at AD have quickly made a believer out of me and many others. I never worry about the burn, or watching a movie later on...good media always pasy off in the long run. These guys keep up on the best deals and sales, just keep an eye open for the posts when someone is giving heads up about a sale...by net or brick and mortor. Have a good one!

along with kivory666 I use Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatims as my signature media. Best Buy has Verbs (+R, 1x-4x) $9.00 for 25. Not bad. Identifier shows them from MCC. I have burned 10 movies in two days and they are flawless. Check them out at BB. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions guys...
Kivory...so you are saying that ALL Verbatims, even those made in Taiwan, are Taiyo Yuden made discs? Best Buy had those rascals on sale last week I think but I didn't pick any up after seeing the Made in Taiwan on all of them. Best Buy has those movie reel discs on sale this week but they just look too funky! There doesn't seem to be any place to mark the title of the disc. I picked up 3 25 packs of Memorex dash R's 16X for $10 each at CompUsa just yesterday! Haven't opened them yet though. You guys have convinced me to take them back and wait for a sale on better quality stuff.
So I can't go wrong with Verbatims?

dont say that you have not had any problem with memorex. As soon as I posted the same comment like that few months back, the whole 50 discs are BAD BAD BAD. I had to call memorex and asked them to do a replacement. Good thing that they did.

Memosux won't do any good to you in the long run. If you value your back up copies such as quality and longevity, then I suggest you switch to real genuine Taiyo Yuden (including Fuji & Sony "Made In Japan"), Maxell "Made In Japan", and Verbatim as soon as possible.

@sacflies,
NO, i think you misunderstood what i was saying, sorry, i reread my post and can see where it was misconstrued due to the way i phrased it.
**Verbatims are now 90% MADE IN TAIWAN, they use a GREAT manufacturer called Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp or MCC for short, they are NOT the same as Taiyo Yuden manufactured media, but quality is VERY GOOD***
Taiyo Yuden media is ONLY MADE IN JAPAN~! and the manufacturing plant in japan that produces Taiyo Yuden media is naturally going to have the TYG01/TYG02 (4x and 8x DVD-R media respectively) and the YUDEN000T02 coding (8x DVD+R media).
i find the quality of BOTH the Verbatim MCC coded discs (made in taiwan) and the the Taiyo Yuden TY/YUDEN coded discs (made in japan) to be of VERY high quality, i just wanted to make sure i was CLEAR in terms of what i was saying.
MCC is NOT THE SAME as Taiyo Yuden media, sorry for my lousy miswording in the above post...they are 2 separate entities, but i find them BOTH to be of very high quality. :)
hope i cleared it up a bit for you...

Thanks for the help guys...

SuperMediaStore has a good sale on 4x -R Taiyo Yudens ... $26.99/100

catfreak--I will give those ugly rascals a shot! But is there anywhere to write titles on the surface, or is it all covered in the dark colors for the movie reel look?

That's the only fault that I can find with the 'Digital Movie' discs - the only place to write on 'em is two fake pieces of tape (one at 3 o'clock, and one at 9 o'clock) Of course, if you're recording one or two movies per disc, that's all ya need

Just got back from returning the 3 25 packs of Memorex DVD-R's to CompUsa and a trip to Best Buy. Looked through the Fuji 50 packs on sale for $20. Did not find any DVD-R's made in Japan (as expected) but I did find quite a few of the DVD+R's made in Japan. Bought a pack and tested it out with DVD Identifier...sure enough they are ID'd as YUDEN000 T02 made by Taiyo Yuden. My only concern now is whether these bad boys will play on my home player. Have not used any DVD+ media yet. I will find out shortly.

@sacflies - what burner do you have ?, as you may be able to 'booktype' (otherwise known as bitsetting) the +R discs to dvd-rom, basically appear to standalone players as a standard dvd-rom disc

@ creaky--I have an NEC (Dell PC). I was just looking for posts on how to booktype to DVD-ROM. Is this easy to do? Can you direct me to a post that would explain how to do this? Thanks.

NEC DVD RW ND 3500AG
Could you change the book type on this drive?
What are the Advantages of Changing the Book Type to DVD-Rom other than tricking the Player to think it's a DVD-ROM?
Does changing it affect anything else negatively? Like burning PS2 Games or is it just something you do for movies?
