Some of the DVD's that I've backed up skip or freeze at various parts of the movies. Most of them are older DVD's that have minor scratches on them. Should I slow down the speed of the burn, use DVD Encryptor and then use Shrink, or a combination of both?

Thanks in advance.

chikin23,
Usually skipping and freezing are caused by inferior blank DVD's If you are not using Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Ritek you need to change. You can slow down the burn speed and that usually helps. Use DVDDecrypter to rip the disk to HD then Shrink to compress and then either Nero or DVDDecrypter to burn

I have the same problem. 6 months ago I simply changed media and the problem was solved. Now I went to repurchae TDK and it freezes and skips about 5 mins into the movie. I then tried HP on my HP system and it does the same thing.

I use Shrink and Nero at 8x. I have an HP Media center PC and denon 2900 DVD player.

I can try yet another batch of media but this is getting expensive. I have had no problems once I found a good spindle. I assume that since the problem has started at the same time as I have changed media that it's a media problem.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Barkus: What format of TDK and HP are you using?

Beware of both those brand names in the plus format, and also the HP in the dash format. You are likely to get cmags on them.

Here's a free handy tool to download. It will tell us what the MID code is on them HP and TDK'S.
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...

Also try playing those problematic backups in the pc drive that burned them and see how they perform. Mainly the areas where they are skipping and freezing. Usually the stand alone players show these issues. Post the results.

Barcus,

HP and TDK dvd+r media are not recommended. HP doesn't make their own media and buys from the lowest bidder and you never know what you're going to get. There is a 50/50 chance of getting cmc mag's with TDK dvd+r media. TDK dvd-r's are usually ok. Keep your burn speed to 4x to minimize burn errors at least untill you get some good, proven, high quality media and I still don't recommend burning them over 8x.

LOL mort.
I know tdk plus format is made by both cmag and ricoh-that I am aware of. I have not yet to see a post of anybody having trouble with the tdk ricohs. It's always the cmags!
Too bad both manufacturers are in taiwan so impossible to tell until you open them up.

I have the DVD+R format of HP and TDK. I assume I need to run the program linked above to tell who really makes them?

Are there brands I can buy that are quality consistently?

I used TDK months ago very successfully...I guess I had the good vendor. Maxell didn't work. Sony has worked. Do all these shop vendors making this harder?

By slowing down the burn speed to 4x and changing the target to 4200 I seem to be successful with Shrink and Nero. Thanks!

At least now I can use the $20 in media I purchased (50 disks total).

When does DVD Decrypter need to be used?

I have played most (about 5) of my problematic discs in the past on the MCE PC without any problems. The Denon 2900 shows the skips/freezes but at least one froze on the PC, too. These tests were all done w/Maxell.

I'm surprised the maxells didn't work. They use some very good manufacturers for both their formats.

Majority of the brand name media like sony/tdk/maxell/memorex/fuji/hp/etc outsource their media to many different manufacturers. Sony/fuji/and maxell have some of the higher quality manufacturers/TDK ok on dash, but not so on plus. HP, really uses a lot of lower quality manufacturers like cmags.

Here's an example of the MID code ricohjpn-01. They make media for sony +4x/maxell +4x/memorex/tdk/verbatim. All with that same MID code. Now when you change different spindles/jewel case or spindle quantities, those manufacturers can vary. They don't vary as much in the sony +8x/Maxell/fuji/and majority of verbatim. The do vary considerably for TDK and Memorex.

Use that dvd identifier to check some of your older backups for their MID code. Codes like yuden000-t02 and SonyD11 on the sony +8x. Both very good, but considering those spindles of japanese and taiwanese sony are all mixed up,sorting for the Made in Japan should yield the higher quality discs. It also works on maxell and fuji.

When to use dvd decrypter:
When DVD Shrink can't rip a certain dvd.
You have a damaged disc,DVD Decrypter is a more powerful ripper.
Ripping one of your backups for extra copies: Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write.
Backing up DVD-9 original with dual layer media, using iso read and iso write.

That denon player may need a lens cleaning.

Whenever DVD Shrink or the transcoder you're useing can't bypass css encryption.

You may be able to increase the compatability with your players by booktyping dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom depending on whether or not your dvdrw is capable of doing this. What brand and model dvdrw do you have?

@Barcus

I believe that there are firmware updates and patches for the Denon 2900. You can do some googling and find out, this may help in recognition of disks.
