DMS HD Format tool without a DMS chip

Will it work?
I have access to a modded PS2 (messiah).
So if I make a bootable cd with the DMS fomat tool on there, will I be able to format the HD even if there isn't a DMS modchip in the PS2?
Reason why I am asking is cause I get a fatal error with HDloader (MC-Exploit) when formatting the drive.
What about formatting it using WinHIIP? (or something)
How is that done?

Yeah DMS HDD Format tool works fine without DMS installed (atleast the version floating around the net).

DMS (Toxic Team) make some of the best programs
out there for modded (chipped) PSTwo's
Most of the stand alone programs work with any chip
like the Toxic DL Patcher for playing dual layer
games.
