Help! I used DVD Shrink and a Sonic Philips DVDRW9 burner to copy a DVD-9 movie. The copy plays on my Apex DVD player just like the original DVD-9, but it won't play on my computer. I have a Dell 4700 that comes with a Sonic Philips DVDRW9 burner. Can someone please tell me how to get the copy to play on my computer or other computer. Many thanks.

You may need to update the drives firmware. You can get an update from your drives manufaturer website. What proggy are you trying to watch the DVD with?

Pardon my ignorance as I am very new in this game. The blank disc I used for copying is Philips DVD-R 1-8x 4.7cb 120 min. I tried to play it with both the RealPlayer and the CyberLink Power DVD in my Dell Dimension 4700 computer. It didn't work. Why is the original disc plays and not the copy? Why are both played in my Apex DVD player? Is there a way to make it work? Thanks for your quick responds.

I don't know what dvdrw you have (never heard of sonic phillips dvdrw9). Might be a phillips DVD8631 or 1640P. Use this freeware proggy and let us know what it shows your dvdrw to be. http://www.vso-software.fr/inspector/inspector.htm We can then look for a f/w update. The media being used could also be a problem. Phillips like memorex, no name brands, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa buys from the lowest bidder and you never know what you're getting from batch and can very easily be garbage. Here's one code for phillips DVD-R media. Not good.

Philips DVD-R 8x (CMC MAG AE1)

I would also try and switch software, use MPC (Media Player Classic) to play the disc. That would rule out the disc as the problem - http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&packa...

my player and recorder is a Philips Model DVD+-RW DVD 8631 Revision:GD30 Buffer size 2048 KB. I have tried to play the copy with Power DVD DX version 5.3.1012, DivX Player, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer. None works. Since I have used the same blank disc to make copies of other movies and they all play on my computer, the problem must be in using the DVD Shrink 3.2 to compress the files to produce a copy that will not play in the same equipment. Any idea to fix it? Thanks.

Try some better media. Cmc mag is one of the worst media manufactures and causes more problems than any other media I know of not to mention longevity problems. I can't guarantee that will solve your problem but definitely won't hurt and is a good plae to start. Your f/w appears to be up to date.

Most any media will work for backing up files but for video reproduction you need good, proven, high quality media such as verbatum, taiyo yuden, maxell, sony mij, fuji mij (mij = made in japan), branded ritek ridata, Stay away from memorex, HP, phillips, no name, and retail store branded media eg. staples, compusa. Keep the burn speed to 4x.

Hi Mort,

I have tried using Maxell (ID RITEKG05) and TDK (ID TTG02). They too didn't work. I opened the file of the copy disc and play one of the VOB file the picture would come on to the computer screen but there was no sound. Since the copy play on my Apex DVD player with both picture and sound, there must be a way to make it play on my computer which make the copy in the first place. Any more suggestion? Thanks again.

Hmm, that is strange. Does it have audio with a new (pressed) dvd's? You said your backups have audio and play ok on your set top player correct.

Hi jpwong,

When did you purchase your Dell ?

I'm not saying your DVD burner is bad, but is you search on here, you will see that there seem that Dell had a BAD BATCH of Philips DVD-8631 drive, around Dec 2004 and Fev 2005.

I had so many problems with that F*&$#@ Philips DVD-8631 I was getting blue in the face.

Drive after March 2005 seems to be OK. Just wanted to see if you had the new batch or the F*&$#@ batch :)

I won't go into details but that drive was crap 105%.
Nothing I did work, and I do know what I'm doing :)

I ended up with a NEC-3450a (Dell OEM) man what a nice drive !!!

Good Luck !

jpwong,

Call dell and let them know the problems you are having. They should replace it under warranty.

Hello Gear79,

I started using VSO DovxToDVD v0.4.x a long time ago.
They released v0.5.x later which was pretty good.

So I started to tell everyone I knew that DivxToDVD was pretty good.

I then became an official ßeta tester for DivxToDVD v2.00 (Curently v1.99.16 Pre-Release with the creation of menus when using multiple files, keep your eyes open people, it's comming soon !!!).

I have since then bought the VSO GoldemMembership and started to use all VSO's software.

I have provided found bugs and ideas for future releases and sevral if not all good ideas were implemented.

I am in contact daily with the VSO team regarding mainly on DivxToDVD Pre-Release but also on all other software.

I think they have an awsome team of people at VSO and I am personally happy with all their software.

I'm a very happy customer, so this is why I have made my signature the VSO sales pitch :)

And NO, I do not work for VSO nor get any commision, I only do it because I want too :)

Give their software a try, and let me know what you think.
It's after using it more than one (Need to learn a software) that you might appreciate it, but they are pretty easy to use !

Sales Pitch over :)
