any VOB to MPEG free converters?

Is there any FREE program that converts VOB to a MPEG file? I don't have a DVD burner, and I want to burn it to a CDR so I can still watch it on my DVD player.

As a quick and dirty method you can try renaming the .VOB to .mpg and
putting it through VCDGear mpg->mpg conversion with "fix mpg errors"
checked. But I'm not sure how compliant the resulting mpg would be.

If you want to convert with menus and subtitles I've used DVD2SVCD.
Only thing is you need an mpg2 encoder. You can get by with the TMPGEnc Plus Trial for 30 days but after that you need to pay for it. But it's only $37 and works with a lot of freeware. I do most of my format conversions with it.

Don't get discouraged if you try DVD2SVCD. The default settings are for high quality conversion and it might want to run all night. But you can tone down the quality settings so that conversion takes a couple hours. It works well though. Once you get the hang of using it you can burn SVCD with selectable subtitles and menus. Very nice freeware. It has a zillion options though, so you really have to read some guides to get what you want done. Even with medium level quality though, the resulting SVCDs are quite watchable on a stand-alone player.

You can Buy a New DVD Burner for $39 US or you can get a Used one on e-Bay for about $20-$25...At these Prices there is no reason not to have one....

If you go into the "Guides" section of this site you will Find a Guide on how to Make a VCD or SVCD from a DVD or VOB files but there are so many inherant Problems with VCD/SVCD"s that it really isn"t worth it to make them as there are Problems like Jumpy Playback and Sync problems pluss it is More expensive to make (S)VCD"S because all movies have to go on at least 2 CD-R"s when you can Put up to 4 Full VCD Movies on One DVD-R and DVD-R"s are cheaper on a MB per MB Basis....
