Hello all, Im not sure if this question fits on this forum but it seemed the closest to what i want.

I have a legit version of windows xp sp1 on disk and as i have used it alot its getting pretty scratched. I was thinking i would back it up to a dvd and also include all the programs that i usually install on my system after i reformat. Is it possible to back windows up to dvd and put other files in folders on the same disk.

If this isnt possible its no biggie but damn it wouold save me alot of hassles either downloading all this software each time i reformat or searching through multiple disks for different versions of all the programs.

Thanks for your help.

It s/b N/P at all.

I used DVD Decrypter to rip then burn to another disc my XP Pro disc.

As for your programs, simple make a folder for each proggy and burn it to disc. I put 6 to 8 programs per DVD because I upgrade certain proggys and don't wish to have to copy 10 or 15 programs whenever I update one or two.

To help, I put all DVD 1-click proggys on 1 disc, all burning proggys on another and all audio proggys on yet another.

A better option is to get a 200GB, USB HD and use that for 100% of your system's backups.

I use a proggy called Second Copy 2000 which keeps a running backup of every proggy on my C:\ and D:\ drives. Should all be lost on my C:\ drive, it takes about an hour to replace it.

Norton has a proggy called GHOST which does the same thing -

Do a little research - you're sure to find siomething you like.

Cheers,

Pete

Yeah idealy id love to get a huge backup hard drive but funds are limited lol but when i do ill be sure to check out ghost.

hi

you may find that adding files to a backup copy of xp pro wont boot up!

if you take a 1:1 image of the OS disc it should be good to go.

but if adding files then you are breaking the structure so to speak without going into all the hype,

you may be able to use ULTRAISO - load the OS disc image to it then add files within the app (re: add file etc?) (i think it should keep volume structure correctly, IE: boot info)

as i have slipstreamed service packs to xp discs and win2000 (basically addding more files like what you need) and the boot info has to be replaced [CORRECTLY] via an app like nero which is capable of adding the boot files (both of them) as a burn structure is happenning...

so yes if done properly!

[[[use quailty dvdr's as cheap stuff will degrade and when you need to use it, its dead!!!]]]

there is an app made special for this sort of thing but cant think of name???

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

You need to do a backup image file. You can't just copy the whole C:\ directory and files directly over to a DVD even if it'll fit.
