I have a silver PS2 around 20 months old model SCPH-50003. It is unmodified, with warranty (1yr) label intact

In the last few weeks it has stopped reading any disks whatsoever - game (orig), dvd, cd. I get a fairly quiet burr sound for a few seconds, then nothing, repeat. If the tray is opened during this via eject button, the disk is spinning.

I've contacted Sony, and so far spoken to
- a regular agent
- a call center duty manager

All I've been offered so far is a £55 (cost recovery only they say) swapout unit. I've now though been promised a call from head office but am not that hopeful.

Any recommendations on strategy?

Legally my only real recourse is against the retailer and credit card company (in the UK these are equally liable) if I can prove that the unit should reasonably last this period of time - anyone have any facts/evidence to help argue this. All I have so far is Sony telling me the failure rate is 1% .. not sure yet over what time period this is.

Alternatives may including dismantling, checking the servo etc, but I'm worried this could jeopordize the above action at this point.

I would keep on phoning them till something was done, the failure rate is more like 80% there lying saying it's 1% because i have read on forums about the disc read error for over two years, I've had three Ps2's that all had the disc read error and i kept them in perfect condition (i even had a Sony DVD player that stopped reading DVDs and there not helpful one bit), Sony must make a lot of money fixing ps2's. Write a letter to there head office and keep doing it till they respond.

If you do end up paying them to fix it then you will receive a 6 month warranty, wait till the 5th month and insure it, it costs next to nothing and is a fail safe for you, that's what i did in the insurance payed for it to get fixed.

aye aye man
