I have used DVD shrink to back up my whole collection of DVD's. HOwever i am getting a little frustrated because slowly most of my burned backups are becoming garbage. They skip numerous times throughout the whole movie, however the quality remains the same. I am wondering if DVD shrink causes this to happen because it has to compress the movie itself to fit on a blank dvd (4.7 GB). There are no visible scratches on any of the discs. Has anyone else experienced this???

P.S - some of the movies i have watched have worked a couple times then start to skip. NO scratches on any of them.

What media did you use and what burn speed? Is the firmware on your burner up to date? I have many backups done using Shrink and no problems with them. I had troubles with my old Xcopy backups with skips and freezes but that was media related.

As previously suggested by "arniebear", the cause of your "skipping" is either media related or burning to fast or possibly both.

If your backup freezes, stutters, skips, or has some pixelation, it is more than likely due to poor quality media being used. Cheap media is poorly manufactured around the edge of the disc, hence the reason why it mostly skips or freezes from the middle toward the end of the movie. The two main things to consider first are:

1. Is it cheap media that you are using? (ie. some off brand you bought at a local computer store/fair, even a store like Circuit City or Best Buy sells cheap low quality media.)

2. How fast are you burning? - Burn no faster than 4X, might have to go down to 2X with really cheap media.

Also, are you using adhesive labels on your back ups? If so, try removing the labels (if you can) and playing them again. Go here for more info on why not to use labels. - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28604

You can go here for some other possible solutions: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44912

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). I understand now what i have to do for further backups. Thanks a whole lot for your input, i really appreciate it.

You're very welcome! Glad I could help. :)

Let us know if changing to a better media helps with that problem. I can guarantee it will though! :)

By using cheap media you run the risk of still having these problem. Single layer media is no longer that expensive just wait for a sale and pick some up from Best Buy, Staples, CompUSA or Office Max. Make sure it is reputable like Sony, Verbatim, Fuji or Maxell, you can usually pick up 50 of these for 20 bucks. If you insist on using your cheap media then reset your target size in Shrink to 4200 so you do not burn near the edge, and as you stated burn it slow.
