PS2 not noticing HDD

I had a PS2 with a Sony Brand HDD. The PS2 broke, and so I borrow someone elses and the HDD works fine, but I had to give it back. A few days ago, I got a new PS2 with DREs on ebay (DREs are much cheaper). So I got the PS2 today, and PS1 games work fine. Well, I plug in the HDD and put in the PS1 game that activates the memory card exploit, and it acts like theres no HDD in there. I tested the HDD with two network adaptors, same result with each one. Is there anyway to fix this?

EDIT: This is a Sony Brand HDD.

Did you say your Ps1 game doesn't activate the memory card and HDD?? O.O
-not sure i understand but the way that i know it you screw in your HDD in the back of ps2 then run it w/out any games in it.. the HDD icon should appear. If not, you run your HDD repair disk so you can reformat the HDD.

Well, something around those lines :)

The PS1 game activates the memory card fine, its just not noticing the HDD.

I'll go check and make sure its on master, but I'm sure it is because I don't remember changing it and it was originally on master.

If neither of these things work, and this thread doesn't get more replies soon, I'll probably just backup the games that I need from the HDD and reformat the drive, and recopy the games again.
