hi all.

i have an older model (un-modded) ps2 (not sure exactly what version atm, im at work so i cant check), but i bought it about a year after they originally released in the US. so it is kinda old at this point.

it used to play movie dvd backups (which i legitimately own) no problem. now it gives me a disc read error every time i try to play a movie backup, even ones I *KNOW* worked before. but it will play the originals no problem. i dont like to play the originals though, cause the ps2 is getting old and im afraid the motor will die and damage them.

this started happening exactly around the time that I purchased and installed the network adapter. so i was wondering if anyone else had seen this behavior? is it related to a firmware update from installing the network adapeter? or is the timing purely coincidental and just a failing laser/motor issue?

i havent tried cleaning the laser head directly yet. ill try that tonight. i have tried using "compressed air" to blow out the dust though, it didnt help.

any advice/suggestions are appreciated.

cheers,
scratch

I'd say its a dying laser; that's a pretty old PS2. My V4 can't play any form of DVD-R anymore. I'm guessing compressed air won't help much, as it's probably not a dust issue. There are some guides online that will help though.

It sounds like its time to succumb to Sony's planned obsolesence and buy a new PS2.

actually, i just tried taking it apart and cleaning the lens (alcohol and a lint free wipe), and bam! now it reads all my backups again! i didnt even have to tune to lens angles or the pots settings.

i still think that my motor is starting to show wear, and it may not be too much longer before it bites the big one. but its got a bit more juice in it yet!

thanks for your input though.

oh and it was a V4 btw.

cheers,

Excellent! Glad you could get it working without resorting to extremes.

i just started having the same problem. i used to burn discs fine, and now i've burned probably over 10 discs of the same 2 movies, and none of them work. but they all work in my other dvd player. it's getting frustrating burning disc after disc and none of them work even though i know they should. now that i know exactly what settings are most compatible for watching burned dvds in home dvd players, i installed hacked firmware for my dvd burner to make sure it's writing the correct "DVD-ROM" book type to my DVD+R discs, and I know it's better to create a DVD (udf/iso) disc for a video disc instead of a dvd movie disc in Nero, and tell it to use udf 1.0.2, i still can't get it to play in the ps2. dangit. i suck at not rambling, sorry. but yea, the ps2 still has trouble. but hey, regular movies still work fine. i haven't tried a game though, since the fall. i just realized today that my ps2 fell off the desk about a month ago and i never had this problem until after that. well, on to the take apart and try to fix. then on to the watch legal backups of my non-pirated movies. lol. you're silly.

Someday I might program YOUR DVD Burner firmware! (or blue-ray disc burner)
