What most in this thread may know, but I didn't, was in Decrypter you can change the booktype on certain Sony drives (rebadged) under the Lite-on tab. I have a DW-Q28A (OEM DRU-800A, Lite-on 1693) and I just went in and changed the setting to DVD-ROM under Lite-on in decrypter and it worked. My original DVD player in my computer would not play DVD+R or any other recordable format. But After making the change to DVD-ROM they play perfectly.

When I tried this step,

03) click on "Extra tab", then "Bitsetting" and on "new setting", change it to "DVD-ROM". That's it and you're all set to go.

It gave me the msg, setting book type failed. Do you know why? I have a NEC 3450A flashed with Liggy's lastest firmware and it supports changing the booktype on DVD+R to DVD-R.

@funkyguy8,

Honestly, I don't know much about the NEC and Leggy's firmware simply because I've never owned one before. I'm pretty sure Mort81 can help you with that alright. However, you shouldn't be having issue when book typing using DVD Decrypter or Nero CD-DVD Speed. If you failed to change the "bitsetting" on Nero, then may be you need to change the "book type" via DVD Decrypter because DVD Decrypter does has a NEC on the list. To change your DVD+R or DVD+R DL into a DVD-ROM format, please follow the below few steps.

(((How to change the Book Type using DVD Decrypter)))

01) Open up DVD Decrypter
02) go to Tools, Drive, Change Book Type (now look for your "Dvd Burner" and click on it)
03) Change For: arrow down to "DVD+R/+R DL Media) and Highlight it
04) New Setting: arrow down to "DVD-ROM" and click on "Change", click on OK (when Success), and OK. That's it... easy as smoking!!!

You said; "I have a NEC 3450A flashed with Liggy's lastest firmware and it supports changing the booktype on DVD+R to DVD-R."
To be honest and according to my knowledge, you can't change or book type any DVD+R to a DVD-R. But I know for sure that it can be done from DVD+R to DVD-ROM though.

funkyguy8,

I like alkohol am not familiar with NEC dvdrw's or the modified f/w required to make them capable of bitsetting.
Quote:

Is this a mistype? Did you mean dvd-rom instead of DVD-R? You may have the wrong f/w.

Ryan32us,

If the settings are grayed (ghosted) out then I doubt your drive is capable of bitsetting.

i dunno if this will help - i have a Sony DRU-700A and have my booktyping set to 'Auto' in Nero Burning Rom (via Recorder/Choose Recorder/Options). i'm not a booktyping expert by a long chalk but what i find is that (for me) all +R discs are quite happily booktyped, and all -R discs are left alone, ie burn quite happily as -R.

I've seen a few Nero logs recently, with this -
Quote:
Book Type request [LG]: DVD-ROM
Book Type setting not supported for the loaded disc type
ie where those people's Nero are trying to booktype when not supposed to. I wonder if booktyping should be set to Auto, ie the same as mine, maybe that would work as opposed to setting it to dvd-rom......(oh and i'm not just restricting myself to Nero in this question)...

thoughts anyone ?.....

Hi creaky,

I have the booktype setting for Nero on auto too but I have booktype utilities for both my dvdrw drives. When I burn a dvd it says set automatically to drive setting when I use my benq to burn. It doesn't say anything about booktyping when I use my litey to burn.

Have you ever noticed if they are useing DVD-R media when this message is in the log? I don't know but that would make sense. I've seen this too but can't remember the format of the media being used.

@mort81, yeah, the examples I've seen were all from Nero trying to booktype -r discs. I thought I'd found an answer to it. Ah well, will have to look into it some more next time it crops up in a log.. Cheers

Thanks for your help everyone. I took creaky's advise, (via Recorder/Choose Recorder/Options) and set it to dvd-rom. I didnt have this option before because I was using the OEM Nero version. Since then I have upgraded to the full retail version and now I dont have to throw away 100 of my dvd+ disc. Thanks again. Just wondering why do they still make dvd+ disc?

Dvd+r is the better technology of the two formats and is the only one you can booktype to dvd-rom. Here is a good read. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113 and here's another. http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/150

I've only recently started booktyping as I'm normally a -r man. Also I've only just gone to 6.6.0.16 and don't recall anything about booktyping in changelogs for quite a few updates. I suspect you're using Nero express maybe ?

@Ryan32us,

I believe 6.6.0.14 can do the job as well. I recalled a few months back then, I had Nero Ultra 6.6.0.14 and I was able to change the book type via Nero Express. However, it won't hurt to update from 6.6.0.14 to the latest Nero 6.6.0.16.

((Here's how to book type using Nero Burning Rom))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every burning using a DVD+R disc your Nero will automatically change the booktype into a DVD-ROM format.

((Here's how to book type using Nero Express))

01) open up Nero StartSmart, then Nero Express
02) now click on "Copy Entire Disc"
03) click on "Options", then on "Book Type Settings", set to "Automatic" and click "OK", then "Exit" out. That's it... easy as sipping on some Corona. Again, now every time when you burn, Nero will automatically change your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM in prior to the actual burning process.

Basically, you only need to set the "book type setting" on Nero once. So, if you book type it with Nero Burning Rom already then you don't need to do it again on Nero Express or vice versa.

Hope this will somehow help you out.

No doubt you guys are gunna get frustrated but, I have checked Nero, Nero express and smartstart , followed the procedures you set out. And well there is just no button for booktyping, the options just don't showit. I beleive what you are telling me is true, it must be something different about my version or drive .Using nero's cd/dvd speed proram, I see all the options under "extras/bitsetting" but if I select this it says bitsetting failed. So first I will assume it is the drive as Mort81 said, so does anyone use a LG gsa 4040b drive firmware A300?If someone else can do this with this drive , then it must be the software. Btw I use Nero ultra 6.6.0.14.

Ryan32us,

Try posting over at cd freaks to see if your drive is capable of bitsetting. They have sub forums for different brands of drives and can more than likely give you the answer or might know of some modified f/w for your drive. Here's a link. http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=91

Hey Ryan32us, I had the same problem a few days ago. when I tried to change the bitsetting a msg came up saying it failed. Well, knowing that my NEC drive upgraded with liggy's firmware allows for bitsetting, I decided to upgrade my Nero to the lastest version, and voila, it works. So first you should check to see if your LG allows for bitsetting, if not, look around for a firmware that will allow you to do it, then try Nero again. if it fails, then you for sure you need to upgrade Nero. or you can just upgrade to Nero and see if it works.
