Hello,

I have a question regarding DVD9 backups on a moded PS2...
I have no intention of "compressing or converting" a DVD9 game to fit on a DVD5 disk. If it's on DVD9 I want to keep it that way. I know my mod chip does support dual layer because it boots a copy of Xenosaga (retail game, approx 8GB) with no problems.

I found this guide (http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/227945) on this site which seems to be a very good guide but it does not mention anything about DVD9 backups.

After doing some more reading I found out about this "Toxic Dual Layer Patch" program. Now here is my question...

Would I be able to use the guide mentioned above, but apply it for a DVD9 disk then at the end, just before burning, apply the "Toxic Dual Layer Patch" program to the image and then proceed with burning the game? Is there anything I should change from that guide or anything extra I should do to ensure a 100% DVD9 backup?

OR

Could someone possibly direct me to a guide that is specific for creating DVD9 backups? I can't seem to find any...

Thanks!

Well, according to the readme file that comes with the toxic dual layer patcher program:- ( i've simplified it a bit )

Just decrypt the iso to the harddrive, then open up the patching program, select the iso you want to patch and start. it only takes a few seconds and you're done.
then with your burning program, make sure the book type is set to dvd-rom and then burn the image you just patched.

You didn't mention what modchip you have either. You mentioned that it boots a retail game of xenosaga... but all ps2's will boot retail DVD-9 games... it's the backups they won't boot without it having a certain chip installed.
I'd find out if your chip does support dual layer backups first before trying anything else... you could end up wasting a lot of money on DL discs if not.

also, look here...i did a search for you

Yes, your mod chip has to be DVD9 Ready.
But most decent one's these days are.

Hmmm....I'm not exactly sure which chip it is...I just got the chip installed a few days ago. When the "Playstation 2" logo comes up it says "Infinity 1.38" underneath it....

I guess I'm just going to have to give it a try and see what happens. I'll post my results.

Thank you all for your replies!

Well, it turns out my mod chip does support DVD9 after all. The guide I used didn't help me in the end. When I got to the part where I had to use Apache2 to build my ISO it rebuilt the image as a DVD5 and I couldn't figure out exactly how to build it as a DVD9, although with the CD/DVD Generator I had rebuilt it with both layers.

What I did was just take the original extracted image and patched it with the Toxic Patcher, burned the image and it booted up on my PS2 with no problems at all.

Again, thank you all for your help!

I haven't tried to backup GOW yet, but I found this tutorial for GOW... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/174869

This should point you in the right direction. I used the exact same media that you are using.

If your PS2 is modded with a chip and is capable of booting/playing a DVD9 media, then yes... go for it. Otherwise, you'll need to rebuild it into a DVD5 media.
