When I was playing madden last night on a burned RiData DVD-R, it played fine until the second quarter, it started to really get choppy and eventually froze up on me. I then reburned it with a Ritek DVD-R and played it right away (to see if it was just the heat of the system) and it played out flawlessly. Right now I'm re-burning it onto a TDK (supposidly the king of DVD-R media for PS2 Backups) disc to see if that makes it even more stable. Just a note for all of you out there who think that it could be your PS2, the heat, or whatever. MEDIA MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE, as does burn speed!!! If you burn it too fast (i.e. 12x or 16x) you may have skips in sound or video..so I'd stick with anywhere from 1x-4x for PS2 Games.

Just an update...the TDK is playing FLAWLESSLY! I highly suggest anyone backing up PS2 Games on DVD go with TDK.

thanks for the post
but media being a bid factor is pretty common knowledge
Some newbies may not know it, but read a few weeks of posts
here and you will see it come up all the time
I use only TDK & Philips for my back ups
they both work great for me.

I would say 1/2 of the problems people have with their
back ups comes from using bad media.

I used TDK DVD-R to make a copy of a game, and it doesn't work at all. I just get a black screen. I have swap magic 3.6 with slide tool. Any suggestions, I burn using DVD Decrypter @ low speeds.

Well, I'm using STAPLES brand DVD-R and out of about 200 disc, i've had 1 movie skip, but just at the end, (I'm guessing that the original was bad) and No Problems with games.

Memorex on the other hand is horrible. But Staples are really cheap. They once had a sale of 50 for 7.50 american.

have you made any back ups that do work?
Is your PS2 modified to play back up games?
I have used TDK many times and they work great
I used mostly Philips now because they work every time.

That is really personal preference
I like TDK and Philips 8X DVD-R
A lot of people like Verbatim, TY, and Ritek G04 also
DO NOT buy +R as the V1 will not play them.
if they work on his, even though he has a mod chip,
then it is a goood burn. Which means it's not your
burner or burning program. It may just be that you do
not quite have the slidecard thing down yet. I hated it.
I bought a flip top case almost immediatly after trying
to use that darn card. Also if you get 8X discs try burning them at 4X.

What games are you trying to back up? Someone can tell
you if there is any rebuilding or patching needed.

My fault dude, i have V4 PS2 , not version 1. I didn't thing about the warning label. So with v4, am i better of with DVD-R at 4X? How about Ritek G04, i heard that they are good. I have a micro advantage dvd burner, thanks

Yeah, you are safe with DVD-R as all versions
can play those. Ritek G04 are suppose to be one
of the better DVD's out there so they should work
just fine.

Man this crap isn't working at all. I haven't been able to burn any games at all. I am using Imation DVD-R 2X speed. Is it because I am using 2X dvd blanks, should i be using 4X, and what speed should i burn at. I am using swap magic 3.6 with slide tool. The only dvd blank that worked for me was a sony DVD-R 1x-8x that my friend let me borrow so I can test out the swap magic.

I don't believe, whatsover, that the media used is ever an issue. It's how the game is ripped and burned. You can take the cheapest of cameras out there that are disposable, and get the same photo results from an expensive camera. It all boils down to how the film is developed.
To rid yourself from coasters and headaches, use my method. I actually found this routine on this board, but have modified it to make it even easier. You just need a little time and patience.

You can't just do an image creation with DVD Decrypter, then turn around an burn it. It's not going to work on all games. You have to clean out the "dud" space that the original image has, then rebuild the image, then you use DVD Decrypter to burn the new image to disc.
An original PS2 game disc has blank spaces on it. Imagine a record album with songs on every other track. When you do just a straight image creation, then a reburn of that image, the blank space is put close to the inner ring of the disc, and the software is pushed to the outter portion of the disc.
Below is how I create my games, and I have yet to see it fail.

** DVD Decrypter to create initial image.
** ISOBuster to extract the files of the image (doing away with the dud space.
** CD/DVD Gen to create the necessary files for rebuilding the image.
** IML to ISO to put the files together to create the final image.
** DVD Decrypter to burn the final image.

Here are the tools you need. You can thank me later.

As far as links to the programs, there should be some time left on the uploads I have provided. Here you go.

IML2ISO (Windows XP Version)
http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=33TDLYOKUMN8A0R6KPIKIKXYIC

IML2ISO (Windows 98, ME, 2000 version)
http://www.sksapps.com/mis/IML2ISO.rar

CD/DVD Generator 1.20 with patch file.
http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0G63XW1HUIQLK2X0KPM9CEKPHB
** If you forget to patch this program after you install it, it will not work correctly, and you will create coasters. **
** The best way to install this program is to unzip all files to a new folder, then run the setup. Afterwards, go back and double click on the file with the word "patch" in it. It will be found in a separate folder inside the folder you unzipped the program to. Double click the patch file, and the patcher opens up. Click the three dots (...), and browse to the C:\Program Files\CD_DVD-ROM Generator 1.20 folder. Then select the cddvdgen file.

ISOBUSTER:
http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2UKGK0MONBK7R0CUFEF9LSOZLG

You can always find the same files here: http://www.sksapps.com/index.php?page=mis.html

** My Instructions **

1. Create the image with DVD Decryptor.
2. Drag the image into ISOBuster (the iso file).
3. Write down the names you see.
4. Now, make a new folder called "iso-rebuilt."
5. Press Cntrl A in ISOBuster to highlight all files.
6. Right click and "extract to" the "iso-rebuilt" folder.
7. When that is done, close ISOBuster.
8. Open the program CD/DVD ROM Generator.
A. Click "new project."
B. Select DVD.
9. Looking at your "iso-rebuilt" folder, drag each file over into
the CD/DVD Rom Generator in the order in which you wrote them
down earlier.
10. Click the "volume" button at the top.
11. For the Disc name, put in Slus, then the number
NOTE: the number is found on one of the file names.
12. For Producer, put in Playstation
13. Click the Record button.
14. You get two errors, this is correct.
15. Click File/Export IML, dump them to your desktop.
16. When this is done, close the program.
17. Open up gdvd4-iml2iso, and have it open the first .iml file
by clicking the ... at the end of the iml box name.
18. Click the Start button on the program.
19. It is now building you a new image of the game.
20. Once done, close that program, open up DVD Decrypter, and have
it burn the new image. From there, you can use DVD Decrypter
to create another image of this burned cd to make "copies" for
your friends without having to go through all of the above
steps over again. This only needs to be done for each new
game title.

** Special Notes **
I have the new slim-line PS2.
I use -R blank DVDs
I'm also using Swap Magic 3.6 with a new lid installed on my PS2.

you only need to go to the extreme of rebuilding when the game has some sort of inbuilt copy protection(ie mercenaries, starwars battlefront,Shadow of rome)
or is dual layered (ie GT4,Fantastic 4,God of War)
Otherwise id just try changing my burning program,
I still use DVD decrypter to rip my isos,
I just burn them back to DVD using nero,
When I use the DVD decrypter iso read iso write method some of my games had slow load times and choppy sound,(ie NFSU2,Flat Out)
Since I started using nero to burn my isos i've never had another problem,
and I do use the Swap Magic Method to play my backups,
I have a V5 sony and a Swap Magic 3.3 with slide tool.

I always use good quality media I usually use TDK but at the moment i'm using verbatim.

Btw, Fantastic 4 is not a dual layer game!

Cant find the patch file in generator...I will keep trying.

I see the file (the two eyes with the eyebrows), but if I open that up, I get the "WinPatch Engine", and I do not see any 3 dots. I see a button labelled "Crack"...if I click on that, it asks what "open File to be patched". I click on the cdvdgen120CDpatch", and I get an error, "error opening file, File may already be open or file does not exist".

Did I already open it up correctly?

eh?

let me send you some of cmc magnetics disks and see what results you get,or even some of my TY fakes, then you will see what happens
and if they do work, keep hold of them and try them again in a few months time, when the dye has faded...see if they boot then

@digitalx,you seem kinda of intelligent, going on some of your other posts, but your way off the mark on this one,i have over 500 games, the last time i counted, and have burnt thousands of them.
the media is everything
and btw, there is totally no need to rebuild EVERY game, thats just plain stupid
the only reason you rebuild games is when the TOC reaches the limit that swapmagic cant handle,or they are dual layer

in fact, dummy files are put there not to prevent people like us copying games, but to make the game play/load smoother
peace out suckers
:)
