I bought the buy one get one free maxell dvd+r disc from office depot. When I burn they seem th burd fine, no error messages ect. Three movies I played though just freeze up about half way through when I watch them. I burned about 20 with memorex and never had a problem. Could it be the dvd's? My burner is made by lg.Thanks for your help

What's the MID code on those maxell + discs? Also the MID code on those memorex?
They are usually coded as Ritek-R03 and Maxell-00-00,both very good media.
Are you viewing them on your pc,using the lg drive or on a stand alone player?
How fast did you burn them?

This is one top notch/high quality grade media from Hitachi, you can't go wrong with that.
I think you either burned them too fast or you need to update your dvd burner's firmware, so it will recognize other blank media codes and your burner will be more compatibility with other high grade media.

@ jeff6898 hi :)
as saugmon has stated RitekR03 and which you have confirmed as R03 is top gear and as alkohol has said i'd be inclined to think it's probably not a media problem

@ jeff6898 hi :)
yep burning at such a high speed is a sure way to introduce errors in the burn.
most on here would advise 4x max and even 2x-2.4x on poor media
may the burn be with you

I do all my +8x media at 4x and even 2.4x when I leave the pc set for auto-shutdown after burn.
I had a typo in my original post, they are Maxell-002-00-I'm an idiot, LOL
jeff6898, Your burner may be able to booktype those plus maxells to dvd-rom.
What is the model#?
What programs do you use on your dvd backups?
Also try shutting off all your background programs,if you don't already.
It could also be your dvd player doesn't like that hitachi media, very odd? At least you got lucky with those ritek memorex's.

it is a lg model #gsa-4163b I been using AnyDVD and DVD Shrink, with Nero burning software. The ring two is the movie giving me the most trouble, and monty pythons holy grail. I'm brand new to this so its probably just me doing something wrong.I saw where you talked about shutting down programs. I been browsing the internet while burning that sounds like a no no.

I've got a program called systemetrix and I can see what happens to my processor during the analyzing and encoding process of using DVD Shrink. That processor is at max speed during those 2 phases. So any program that kicks in can affect your backup. The burning stage only uses about 2% of the processor.
Another thing to check on is Compression. Highly compressed dvds can cause playback issues like you are having. I usually only do main movie only/AC3 5.1 CH English only/and cut out majority of the ending credits.
Are you backing up entire disc or re-authoring in DVD Shrink?
Also, check to make sure those memorex backups will still play ok. My sony dvp-ns 325 started having the same issues at the beginning of my backups. Watching my older backups, they had the same problems at the beginning. A lens cleaner helped some, but it started giving me problems on my dl backups so I replaced that stand alone player. All those backups played perfectly on that cheapo magnavox player.

I am backing up the entire disc. I tried the re-authoring thing but just didn't understand it. Should I invest the extra money on dual layer dvd's for dual layer movies? would the qaulity be better then just burning them to a single layer dvd?

Dual Layer can help because you set it then has much less compression. If you dont care about all the extra audio and ending scenes just uncheck those boxes and you can really get a good backup.
You can get rid of everything but main movie in most cases and have a near 1:1 copy. Saves much money on the whole dual layer question. I converted after asking myself that question and learning how to use SHrink and Decrypter better about a year ago.

If you use dual layer media you will get an exact copy of your original disk. There is no need to compress or re-author. If you are just going to do the movie only then use a single layer disk with movie only there is usually very little compression, and at the price of dual layer media it can become expensive.
