hi I'm editing my last entry about one of my ps2 getting a virus i got told that new games like (Area 51) the manufactures are putting viruses on the disks that become active when copied than played on a chipped system can any one enlighten me on thus subject thanks.....

OK i dont think your ps2 can get a virus unless you dl a program with was real but maybe a person but a virus in....what exactly happend to your ps2

The only possibility that your PS2 is infected with a virus is when you downloaded a game from the net (which has/carried a virus on the files that you've downloaded), you then burned all of the files into a DVD-R/+R blank and load it on your PS2. Other than that, I don't think so.

i would have to agree with the above.
I have never heard of a PS2 getting a virus
it would be more likely that a download with a virus
would have infected your PC before you ever got the
files to your PS2. Most of the time a virus attacks
your file system or hard drive, so unless you have a
hard drive on your PS2 i can't see what it could infect.

Maybe if the Linux OS for the Ps2 was more common then virus makers might have made something for it but that is highly unlikely since it's just not widely used, at lest not by virus makers.

For a PS2 to get a virus, it would need to be designed in such a way that it would allow such non-game code to be executed from the "infected" disc.
Then it needs to allow storage, such as to the mem card or HDD.
Then for a virus to actually do something other than when the infected disc is inserted, the virus would need a way to launch itself or cause the PS2 to execute its code. This is very unlikely.
The first thing that would execute is the PS2 BIOS and loading some stuff from flash chips on the mobo, such as the system date and time. Unless you can modify that BIOS code or firmware, or find some way to attach to it (such as the old interrupt hookups on PC virii) it won't go. Assuming this is not done, there is a possibility that the PS2 attempts to read executable code on the memcards or HDD when it initializes them, which it likely doesn't do. What's left to initialize a virus? Only a game disc with viral code modifications?
Just musing because it's late and I have nothing to do....

Another possibility is if the PS2 actually uses a hard drive in a similar way to a PC, in that it uses a boot sector in which executable code can be stored and can actually execute this code. Again, this is unlikely as anyone on the development team with half a brain would have realized this as a method for not only launching virii but piracy software such as boot loaders.
