I recently modded my ps2, not sure what chip was used since a friend did it. The PS2 is the most recent version, not slimline, but it was purchased a few months ago. So, down to the problem. I've been backing up games recently and only a few work perfectly, most of them either don't play, freeze, or skip. I have a few ideas as to what it could be, but I figured I'd post here before I started buying new stuff.

I'm currently using a very cheap 16x +- dual layer dvd burner from liteon. Not sure if that would be the cause, but I've also had some trouble backing up dvd's. Also, I've been using a very cheap dvd+r's. I believe 20 cents per dvd. As for software, I've tried DVD Decrypter and Alcohol 120%. So, any advice would be helpful. I've considered buying a new DVD burner, and also I need to order some better dvdr's.

I tried one of my roommates nicer DVD-r's and the PS2 doesn't even read it, it does however read my DVD+r's but they're buggy.

well if youll scan the boards youll see that "cheap" media is definately bad. The fact is costs $0.20 doesn't mean much, but using subpar media is probably your biggest problem. You can search around here http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47 to get some idea of good media to use. Also, if you're using the full 16x of your liteon (which are pretty good burners), you should probably burn much slower around 4x or even slower. DVD+ and DVD- will both work on PS2s, tho in general my +R's work better than my -R's. I've never used alcohol, because Ive never had to. DVD Decrypter has never really let me down. Your problem could also originate from the game, as some games require special attention when backing them up.

hmmm... ok, thanks for the advice. I'm gonna order some of the dvd's that are recommended in the forum. I've been burning at 4x usually, recently at 2.4x. The games I'm having trouble with are older, Ratchet and Clank series, and the most recent being Darkwatch. Thanks for the info.

@tlafleur,

Your Lite-On 16X dual layer dvd burner is actually a good burner in this case. I suspect there is a possibility issue with the media you're using to do your back up. What kind of blanks or brand of media do you use to do your back up? I would only recommend the notorious genuine Taiyo Yuden (including both FUJI & SONY "Made In Japan"), Maxell "Made In Japan" that's manufactured by Hitachi, and Verbatim (MCC003) only. Other than that, I would suggest you to stay away from them unknown blank media regardless of how cheap they are.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

I usually use the cheapest stuff on Shop4tech.com. Right now they're selling a brand called Sonic. It's just cheap stuff for backing up dvd's, which they work fine for.

I believe I'm going to order these DVD-R-media-silver-lacquer.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.meritline.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-DVD-R-media-silver-lacque...
