- you're burning to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences, thus avoiding outer edge of discs and not sacricing much space

- oh no!, THE worst, most foul dvd media money can buy.

We need to get that firmware sorted. what's the odds off temporarily disconnecting the ribbon cable from that cd-rom drive and retrying the firmware update

Its not the outer packaging name, but who actually manufactures the disc itself. CMC MAG are the one who makes that "HP" name. CMC MAG are the worst disc's you could use/buy.

They are all over the world. Some manufacture out of Taiwan, Japan, USA. The reason their media is poor is cause of the dye they use.

As with anything in life, you get what you pay for.

Yep you got hosed on those discs but let's try that firmware update.
Boy do I feel like a dumb as* - the reason it didn't work is cause it's not the right one. I kept insisting I had the dvr108- nope have the a108 - at least pioneer put a idiot proof stop in there:)
I guessing Pionner is not the oem of your drive but medion is. Try the 1.07 next to medion in this link:
http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1615
If you have trouble accessing the site we'll have to figure out another way to get to you.

editted to correct link

okay - we have a problem - i would've bet your's was either the pioneer or medion due to your model #.
I think creaky has the answer:

what i suspect is that the firmware flasher is not happy about having the cd-rom drive on the same cable/channel as the pioneer ?...
You can try uninstalling the ide chanell's in device manager and rebooting.

try this - http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm

..but i'm thinking it's more that we maybe need to physically disconnect that cd-rom drive like i suggested before...

After you try the uninstall of the ide channel try the firmware update again. It might work. Otherwise you will need to disconnect the cd rom drive as creaky suggusted. Since they're sharing it's probably why you can't flash/update the drive.
Let us know how it goes.
