I keep getting this error message. It just started and I can't figure out what is wrong with my burner. I know I need to update the firmware but that shouldn't be the whole problem because it was working and now it's not. Any suggestions

1. Update Nero- you are 1 version behind
2. Update the burner's firmware it is up to 1.19 and you are running 1.11
When you update then re-try and if it fails re-post the Nero log

I updated my Nero. not the firmware because when I try it has issues. Here is the new failed burn log. Is my burner dead? It worked for months then bang it stop working and I keep getting these burn errors. What is Unspecified target error. I keep getting that

What issues did you have updating your firmware?
Nero is not recognizing the disc your are using - which a firmware update can help - only that it's a +R.

The MID code of your media should be listed there. Example: Ritek-R03
Sounds like your ricoh burner isn't recognizing your blank discs.
What is the brand name and speed rate of those blank +r discs?
Probably going to have to update that firmware.
Did you change anything on your media like different brand name/format/and even different spindle/pack between the time you were burning fine and now you can't burn at all?
Use nero info tool/ dvd decrypter/ or download this free handy program to ID those blank discs:
ID some of those successful backups also and give us those MID codes.

Edit: Also look at the bottom side of those discs that errored out. Likely no actual burn has taken place so those discs may still be usable.

Saugmon and Binkie7 are correct as we need to get the firmware updated to make sure the burner can recog. the blank media you are
using

OK here is the problem with trying to updated my firmware. I download the correct firmware and when I go to flash my drive it won't find my burner. I get the error of Cannot change Drive to Up Mode.
*** NG ** NG ** NG ***
Make sure Selected Target Drive.
I have nothing running in the back ground. So I guess I really don't know what I'm doing wrong. I tried looking for some guide on the internet on how to upgrade your firmware but I have found nothing that has helped me so far. Got any suggestions. It's RICHO DVD+RW MP5240A
I use sony and Memorex DVD's nothing has changed except I brought these at Wallymart's

Your burner is not a 5480A it is a 5240A make sure you got the right firmware.

D/L DVDinfoPro (free) and see what it states the drive as. If it comes up w/ the same info you have then there is a problem and the drive might need to go back to manuf. or at least call the manuf and report the problem to them and see if they have a workaround. Is the drive an OEM or is it an original Ricoh? If OEM you will probably have to go to the computer manuf site and see if there is an Update

After I posted I read what you posted and then I had to go and see if I gave him the correct firmware info. You caught the typo as I missed it but the firmware page is correct. Thanks for the heads up and thank goodness there is no 5480 burner at the firmware update site.

Cool a guide with pictures. I will try this over the weekend and let you know what problems I have. Hopefully none. Thanks for your help. Could you tell me what this means in the Nero message: Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) I've always wondered. Thanks again

KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST - Indicates that there was an illegal parameter in the CDB or in the additional parameters supplied as data for some commands.

This will sound like a silly question, but I'll ask it for the sake of asking: Are you using decrypter?
Or do you just use dvdshrink and then burn with Nero?

I suggest you remove the software from your PC referent to the RICOH and re-install step by step. First install the software that came with the RICOH than UPGRADED. Next install the software that you are using to DECYPHER and BURN your CDS. Remember to upgrade WINDOWS also.
One of my burners is a RICOH too.

Ok I try again today but I still got the same error message:
Cannot update for different Type Code.

I don't know what to do now. I shut the DMA off and I turn off all programs running in the back ground. I guess I'd better go and buy a new burner.

I'd hold off on the burner for a bit. Worst case buy some Sony, Fuji (look for made in Japan)or Verbatim DatalifePlus.

Ok I will hold off on a new burner for a little while. I am getting frustated because I have been having this problem with the firmware for 6 months now. Thanks for all the help. I do appreciate it.
