It depends on what kind of disc you are using. some DVD players can't play -R/RW and some can't play +R/RW. So it's best to just booktype to DVD-ROM

@hopper8, GlueEater is right and I would add that some players will play almost any disk, even cheap media, while others must have the best media (TY's, Verbs, and Maxell.) I have 2 sony's and a Denon (Denon plays Ty's Verbs and Maxell's no problem) the Sonys will play even the cheap media...place the cheap media (- or +) and it will skip, pause and then freeze. I would encourage you to not only booktype the + media, but to burn at 4x or slower and use good media.

My standalone player has always played everything I've burned on every type/brand of media. I've used no names, Khypermedia, Memorex, HP, and lately Ridata and Taiyo Yuden. Recently I burned a movie to a Memorex disk and gave it to a family member after making 2 other copies for me, one on a Ridata, the other on a Taiyo Yuden. Uhhhhh, my copies of just this particular movie on the "good" disks won't play in my standalone unit, but will play on my computer. The standalone has always played everything else I've burned, just not THIS ONE movie. I traded my Ridata for the Memorex I gave away. The Ridata plays fine in their machine, and now I can play the movie on the Memorex in mine. Wonder what the deal is on that?!

book type or bit set the DVD+R in essence is turning it into a DVD Rom, which plays in a wider variety of players. If you use Nero, towards the final stages prior to you initiate the burn there is an options tab that when you select it you will see a box that is either checked or unchecked labled book type. I have mine set to automatic. If your burner can be set then you should see this. Some burners need a firmware upgrade before this is possible. Decrypter can be set as well, but decrypter can burn as long as it fits on a single layer disk or DL (with no compression). Instead of using File mode in decrypter you would use ISO mode...1st Read then write the iso image to the disk. In the tools tab in decrypter, scroll down to drive, then scroll down to set book type...that's it. That should allow your burns to play in a wider variety of standalone players.
