DVD's copied by XCopy play fine, coverted from AVI will NOT play

I have made backup copies of DVD's using DVDXcopy and they work fine in my DVD player (the one connected to the television). However, those converted by DVDSanta and burned to DVD will not play at all in the same player.

Can someone advise the BEST conversion of .avi's for DVD play, the best DVD disc (I have some DVD -r and VDV +r) and how you differientiae between which to use.
Also the best DVD player that will accept these home-made discs.
For example, I've downloaded all of the Tarzan Episodes (not out on a DVD, nor expected to be) I want to covert them, burn them to DVD and be able to watch them, just as I would a commercial DVD of Buffy, Angel, Stargate SG-1, etc...

I appreciate any and all assistance here.
Please remember too, that while not an idiot, I'm also not a teckie. Moderately detailed explanation are good.
