Welcome to aD!
It sounds like the brand of blank dvd's you are using. PS2's can be kinda picky depending on which model you have. Your burn speed may also be too high.
What brand are you using? Are they - or + r - does your standalone support both formats? Burn speed?

Okay verbatim are quality discs. The question remains though will your standalone play +R - most older dvd players won't - newer ones recognize both formats. The ps2 - I have an older one that plays both but does have problems with high burns speeds.
Are you using Nero to burn? If so I think the best thing to do would be to post your log - you may need a firmware upgrade.
To play the movie on you pc just open w/ Power DVD, Nero Showtime, WMP, real player etc.

Try the dash format of some quality media and test them out in that ps2 and home theater systems.

ps2's seem to favor the dash format.

I haven't heard much about the lightscribe media, usually playback issues on stand alones.
Those verbs should be very good, but I'm not sure how the compatability fares on stand alone players/game consoles/and other pc dvd drives.

It's probably a compatability issue w/ your media and players. I don't think HP supports booktype but I think Saugmon would be better able to explain that one and if there's a way. Booktyping just makes a DVD+R appear to be a dvd rom which is the most universal recognized disc in players.
Nero is a copying software that runs after rebates about $40-50.
What's the model # of your hp? A firmware update may help.

Booktyping: It's a feature on some dvd burners that can change the plus format into dvd-rom format, making your backups more compatable on stand alone players. I'm not sure if HP burners have this feature.

Dvd-rom is the universal format for dvd players.By booktyping the plus format backups to dvd-rom,you are fooling those stand alone players into playing backup discs. Plextor/benq/Lite-on/LG/and Nu-tech are some of the brand names that support the booktyping feature. Pioneer and NEC have to have hacked firmware.

I have the 640-c sitting in a box after a dozen burns. It came with my HP pc,but the compatability of those backups didn't live up to my expectations. Those backups also had too many read errors, making them impossible to re-rip those HP backups. The lightscribe is a nice feature, but I use full hub printable media and the epson r-200 photo printer.

Here's a link that may help update your burner's firmware. It's for the 640c,but probably the same as the 640I.Just double check before updating to the latest firmware.

how do i make it have chapters instead of running like a cpu program (which fortunately is hooked to my tv and reciever) so i can watch them at least on there instead of having no good dics?
or is that what Nero does. and if so is there a trial to it so i can try it and see if that is it?

You burner may have come with some software that will enable you to watch dvd's and copy dvd's. Which did it come with - if any?
Also windows media player and real player will both play dvd's. Do you have either of these?

Maybe what is going on is that Record Now is not recording your movie correctly.
One of the reasons DVDs may play on a computer and not in a player is the wrong type of files are being made. PCs can play both types of files, DVD players can only play one type.

Your Record Now may not be set correctly to create the right file system.

Shrink and DVD Decrypter work very well together.

Download DVD Decrypter from the software section here at Afterdawn.

Shrink will automatically open DVD Decrypter and use Decrypter's burn engine to burn the blank. You do not need to open Decrypter, Shrink does it for you.

You do need to make the correct settings in Shrink though:

Open your movie and let Shrink do it's thing.

When that finishes, Select "Backup!" The Backup DVD menu will open.

On the Target Device tab, find the "Select Backup Target:" change it to "ISO Image File and burn with DVD Decrypter"

This tells Shrink to encode the movie as an ISO image and then to open Decrypter when the encoding process finishes to start the burn process, just make sure you have a blank DVD in your burner.

Select OK to start the process.

Nero is good to have because it works great (for me at any rate) and also if you have a problem it can create a very detailed burn log which really helps with problem solving. Shrink can open Nero as well.

Nero free trial:

Nero charges around $80.00 but you can get it cheaper, $24.50:

I'd try the +R movie you made in a friends player and see if it works. As mentioned though, try burning some -R media as well.

Just my 2 cents,
Frank
