I have read SO many threads pertaining to making backups of games and then using them instead of the originals so when they get broken you can just re-back them up. As everyone knows there are MANY versions of PS2 and ways to use these backed up games. I am a little confused and if someone can make is simple for me, then people can search and hopefully find this thread and make it simple for them.
1. Can you just buy Swap Magic V3.6 (as of 9/6/05 and a Flip Top Cover and use it on SCHP-70000 or SCHP-70001 PS2 Slimline consoles and run backed up games without buying a Mod Chip of any type.
2. Can you buy a Mod Chip (soldered or solderless) and install it and skip the Swaping Disk thing or do you still need Swap Magic?
3. If you can do Swap Magic OR a Mod Chip, what is the benefits of one over the other since with the new Slimline PS2's you have to open your case anyway to mount the Flip Top Cover?
4. Not going to ask preferences because that will start up a whole long thread that no one will ever read but if you are using a Mod Chip that has NEVER not worked if you burned correctly what chip do you use?
I HAVE really searched and I did not find these answers in any one thread. I think it will help greatly me and many other "Backup users" Thanks in advanced.

YES, that or Swap Magic and a Slimtool which serves the same
purpose of stopping the PSTwo from resetting when you
swap discs.

2. Can you buy a Mod Chip (soldered or solderless) and install it and skip the Swaping Disk thing or do you still need Swap Magic?

With a mod chip there is no swapping. Just put in the back up
and it will run like the original. Although you can not get a
solderless chip for the Slimline so you will either have to know
how to solder REALLY GOOD or get a professional to install it
which costs about $50.

3. If you can do Swap Magic OR a Mod Chip, what is the benefits of one over the other since with the new Slimline PS2's you have to open your case anyway to mount the Flip Top Cover?

There are no benefits to Swap Magic other than the fact that
initially it will be cheaper. But when you factor in that every
time you want to upgrade to new features it means buying a new set
of the discs, then in the long run it will end up coting you more.
mod chips (at least good one's) have flash upgrades. All you do
is download them, burn it to a CD and run it in your PSTwo and
it will upgrade the chip with any new featurs available.
Another benefit is a chip can play DVD9 (dual layer) back ups and
swap magic can't. And no swapping is another benefit of course.
Good chips now also have hard drive support. No games have to
be rebuilt or patched like with Swap magic. Except for online
playing in which case they all need to be patched.

4. Not going to ask preferences because that will start up a whole long thread that no one will ever read but if you are using a Mod Chip that has NEVER not worked if you burned correctly what chip do you use?

I have both a V7 with swap magic an a flip top
and a mod chip (DMS4 Pro) so i can tell you the mod chip
is easier for sure. And no i have never had my mod chip not work
except for 2 games that were from a different region.
I have an NTSC PSTwo and the games were in PAL
Not the chip will play them, but the have problems due to the
screen rate difference of the 2 regions. All my other PAL games
that i had worked, but for some reason these did not.
EVERY game that was from my region worked just fine.

Thank you Steimy for this info. This answered my questions really well. I am going to order a DMS4 chip. I solder for a living (10% of my job) so I will maybe try it, depends. I have also ordered my Swapmagic 3.6 anyway with a Fliptop since it was so cheap until I get around to installing the chip. Once again thank you SO much for your help.

no problem. You'll love it.
Make sure after you install it to go here
http://web02063.prolocation.net/phpBB2/index.php
under third party flashes and ghet the ToxicOS V0.3
Burn it on a CD as the tutorial on the site instructs
and play the CD in your PS2 to flash the chip.
I would also install the flip top and hold onto the swap magic
in case you want to use cheat discs, or play games online where
you have to disable the chip.
here is some other useful info for you.

Dev.olution mode

Using Dev.olution mode you can boot applications from either the memory card or hard disk drive. When booting in MC Dev.olution mode, the ELF file "mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF" is launched. This ELF file can be anything you want, such as DMS Explorer, PS2Menu, PS2OS etc. To boot in MC Dev.olution mode either hold down TRIANGLE on controller 1 while the PS2 is booting, or set default boot mode to MC Dev.olution in the configuration menu. Currently the only application which can be launched with HDD Dev.olution mode is DMS HDD Explorer. Once HDD Explorer is installed, you may boot in HDD Dev.olution mode by either holding down START on controller 1 while the PS2 is booting, or set default boot mode to HDD Dev.olution in the configuration menu.

ATAD auto-patching

When ATAD auto-patching is enabled, you can connect a non-Sony HDD to your PS2 and use it as though it was an official Sony drive. You will be able to install and use the HDD browser update (found on the HDD utility disc) on a non-Sony HDD, and you will be able to partially install some games or applications with HDD support to improve performance..

Fast boot mode

Fast boot mode allows you to skip the redundant "swirling electrons" screen and directly load your game as soon as you turn on the console, saving valuable time which would be better spent gaming. To use fast boot mode, either hold down SELECT while the PS2 is booting or set default boot mode to fast boot in the configuration menu.

Default boot mode

Using the configuration menu you can set the default boot mode to one of the following: Normal, Fast Boot, MC Dev.olution, HDD Dev.olution. If you do not manually specify a boot mode while the PS2 is booting by holding down a button on controller 1, the default boot mode will be used. For example if the default boot mode is set to MC Dev.olution, when you turn on the PS2 without holding down any buttons on the controller, your MC Dev.olution application will be loaded from the memory card. If you then wish to boot normally (i.e.: boot through standard browser) hold down CROSS on controller 1 while booting to over-ride the default boot mode.

Playstation 2 game video fix

There are 4 different modes for the PS2 video fix, as described below:

- Colour Carrier: The colour carrier of the video signal is changed to match the region of your console.
- Force PAL: Video mode forced to PAL (50hz), regardless of what video mode games try to set. Y-position fix applied.
- Force NTSC: Video mode forced to NTSC (60hz), regardless of what video mode games try to set. Y-position fix applied.
- Force PAL60: Video mode forced to PAL60, which is 60hz with PAL colour carrier. Y-position fix applied.

The y-position fix is used to shift the vertical position of the display to where it should be. For example, simply forcing PAL when a NTSC game is running will generally result in the display being far off center. The y-position fix corrects this and centers the display.

Configuration Menu

The configuration menu displays useful information about your PS2 system and DMS4 modchip. To enter the configuration menu, hold down SQUARE on controller 1 while the PS2 is booting.

Language fix for fast boot/Dev.olution mode

A problem is present with most other modchips, where if you launch a game or application from either fast boot or Dev.olution mode the language will be fixed to English. DMS4 reads the language which has been set in the PS2 browser and uses this when launching a game or application from fast boot mode or Dev.olution mode.

Disable Mode

To disable DMS4, hold down L1 on controller 1 as the PS2 is booting. You will see a message saying that the modchip has been disabled. Insert your game and reset the console - the modchip will now be disabled and will stay disabled until the PS2 is placed in standby.

Boot-time controller mapping

When the console is booting, holding down certain buttons on controller 1 will activate certain modes/features. These are listed below:

CROSS - Use standard boot (over-ride default boot mode setting)
TRIANGLE - MC Dev.olution mode
START - HDD Dev.olution mode
SELECT - Fast boot mode
SQUARE - Load configuration menu
L1 - Disables modchip when Toxic is installed , SQUARE - Disables when the original bios of dms4 hasn't been upgraded to toxic.
