I'm selling my modded xbox to get a modded ps2. I'm planning on taking my 120GB Seagate HDD from my xbox and using in my PS2 to copy purchased games on. Here are my questions:

1) Where can I find a tutorial on how-to install my 120GB Seagate HDD in my PS2?
2) What do I need to run my purchased games off the HDD (money is not a problem if I need to purchase something)?
3) Do a lot of games work off the HDD?

Thanks.

http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=ps2_installation

2) What do I need to run my purchased games off the HDD (money is not a problem if I need to purchase something)?
HD Advance, or a good mod chip like DMS4 Pro
(HD Advance has about a 95% compatibility rate)

3) Do a lot of games work off the HDD?
here is a compatibility chart
http://www.hdadvance.com/index.htm
http://list.ps2hd.com/

also you must find an old style PS2 somewhere
Unless it is a USB hard drive it will not work with the
new Slimline PSTwo. If it is USB then you need USB Extreme
and not HD LOader i think.

Wow, thanks a bunch steimy! You've been a great help! Five more questions:

1) Do I need the PS2 network adaptor if all I want to do is copy/play my retail games on the HDD using the DMS4 E.Z.I. Pro solderless modchip?
2) Does the DMS4 E.Z.I. Pro solderless modchip boot apps/emus off a CD-R in the PS2 without the need of swapping dics?
3) If I use the 120GB HDD that I used in my Xbox (and formatted for), will formating the HDD for the PS2 overwrite the formatting for the Xbox?
4) What program do I use to launch my games from the HDD?
5) What version of PS2 should I try and get, second best, etc.

1) Do I need the PS2 network adaptor if all I want to do is copy/play my retail games on the HDD using the DMS4 E.Z.I. Pro solderless modchip?

i don't have a hard drive on my PS2 but will do my best here
I think for a hard drive you do need a network adapter
i always see sites selling the HD Advance & adapter together.
But the DMS chip (if you have the ToxicBIOS V1.3) only has aprtial support for hard drives so HD Loader is a better choice.
The DMS4 Pro woould have done it with nothing extra.

2) Does the DMS4 E.Z.I. Pro solderless modchip boot apps/emus off a CD-R in the PS2 without the need of swapping dics?

Not sure but here is a site that can help with all of your
DMS chip questions
http://web02063.prolocation.net/phpBB2/index.php

3) If I use the 120GB HDD that I used in my Xbox (and formatted for), will formating the HDD for the PS2 overwrite the formatting for the Xbox?

Yes it should. When you reformat a hard drive on a computer it
wipes it clean and starts from scratch, then reformats it.

4) What program do I use to launch my games from the HDD?
HD Advance with a standard hard drive, USB Extreme for USB
hard drives.

5) What version of PS2 should I try and get, second best, etc.
V7 was the best i think, then V9
here is how to tell what version it is
the number will be on a sticker on every PS2

The version 1, 2 and 3 PlayStation 2 all have 10 screws on the bottom of the unit.

SCPH30001 v1 = Serial# begins U1
SCPH30001 v2 = Serial# begins U0
SCPH30001 v3 = Serial# begins U1 Date 1A
SCPH30001 v3 = Serial# begins U2 Date 0D

The versions 4 through 10 PlayStation 2 all have 8 screws on the bottom of the unit.

The 4 and 5 also have the electrical warning stamped on the bottom of the PlayStation 2 case.

SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U0
SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U1
SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U2
SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U3
SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U4
SCPH 30001 v4 = Serial# begins with U5
SCPH 35001 v4 = GT3 Edition

There are 3 different motherboards for the
SCPH30001R - Version 4, 5 and 6
SCPH30001R v5 or v6 Motherboard
SCPH39001 v7

SCPH50001 v9

SCPH50010 v10

Thank you so much again Steimy, you're awesome! Four last questions for anyone to answer, I promise these are my last!

1) If I get HDAdvance and my PS2 doesn't have a modchip in it, will it read the HDAdvance disc right away, or will I need to use a method/product for the PS2 to read the disc? If so, what method/product?

2) On the HDAdvance website, they say you need the slide tool or flip top cover for converting backups/imports onto the HDD. But they don't say you need one for converting original games to the HDD. If all I want to do is convert orignal games on the HDD, I don't need the slide tool or flip top cover?

3) On the HDAdvance website, they explain how to convert a DVD-9 game from the computer to the PS2. What is a DVD-9 game and are they explaining how to convert it to the HDD using a computer because you can't convert it to the HDD using just the HDAdvance disc like all other games?

4) On the HDAdvance website, they write "There are also issues with some modern Seagate drives, which cause problems when used in conjunction with older models of the official PS2 network adapter". I have a Seagate 120GB 8MB Cache HDD, so how do I know if the network adaptor is new enough for the HDD to work?

wish i could help more, but i have never used
HD Advanced so i have no clue
i can tell you that you only need a slidecard & swap magic
or the flip top to play back ups, not originals.
and a DVD9 is a dual layer game.
bigger than your standard game, single layer (DVD5)

Thanks steimy, you've been a GREAT help! Don't feel like you have to answer all my questions, but thanks a bunch for your help so far. I guess that only leaves me with one question that maybe someone else might be able to answer:

On the HDAdvance website, they write "There are also issues with some modern Seagate drives, which cause problems when used in conjunction with older models of the official PS2 network adapter". I have a Seagate 120GB 8MB Cache HDD, so how do I know if the network adaptor is new enough for the HDD to work?
