There are hundreds of different ways and different programs you can backup your DVD's with. Everyone has their special "way" of doing it. There is no "best" way to do it. I suggest you find a guide and try to see if you like it.

Me for example, I only use DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 and DVD Shrink 3.2 to backup my DVD collection: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45238

Here is a page with all kinds of guides using various programs: http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/

@jesserahe, jmet gave good advice. There are numerous progs and plenty of guides to help you learn and enjoy those programs. Beyond Decrypter and Shrink...you will see Intervideo Copy 3 (www.intervideo.com) I personally like it, but others have had numerous problems when it came to re-authoring (which makes it sub par even though the copy quality is excellent.) CloneDVD 2/AnyDVD is a great combo, AnyDVD works in the background and works well with most programs (Including Copy 3), Recode 2 from Nero (same author of Shrink), Dvd Fab Platinum, DVD2One (great joining feature that I really like). The list can be long, but I would say to use what works with you and your system. Some progs. that I use and recommend need to be downloaded on a trial basis first. Try it before you purchase. The free progs. are excellent as well. The extra time of encoding is worth it. My favorite, and many others, is Dvd Rebuilder Pro/CCE Basic encoder. The installer for this program and the many progs. that come with it can be downloaded from www.dvd-rb.com Go to www.slysoft.com for the clonedvd2/anydvd combo. Have fun!

Ok here we go.
Using DVD Shrink programm is totally optional for backuping movies. Most of movies out there always use double layer (takes more than 4.7 gig). The purpose of the DVD- Shrink program only to compress the file small enough to fit in regural 4.7 gig DVD+/-R's. This really will save you lots of money when you buy DVD-R's.
I really recomend you to also install DVD Decrypter and DVD 43.
