I'm sure there is a thread for this already, but I couldnt find one.

This doesnt always happen but sometimes I will burn a movie and when I go to watch it on my home theater, it will say cannot play this disc, or disc error. Then I will eject it and put it back in and it will work. Well I borrowed a couple of my movies out and they all work on my DVD player, but they couldnt get them to work because it says the same thing stated above. Whats the problem here???

FYI...I use TY's printable DVD's, DVD Shrink with ANYDVD, and Nero Enterprise edition to burn.

burn at a slow speed if your not already no faster then 4X. could be a bad batch of blank Media. That does happen every once in a while, and also just because they play on your DVD home player dosent mean they will play on others Home DVD player. Mine play on my DVD Player but wont on my sisters and my friends. Depends on the DVD player they have.

Also make sure they are wiped clean with no fingerprints or dust on the bottem.

What format are your blanks (+r or -r)? DVD-R is more compatable unless your burner is capable of booktyping DVD+R to dvd-rom. Dvd-rom is most compatable followed by DVD-R then DVD+R. Are your blanks branded taiyo yuden and what are the numbers/letters around the hub of the dvd? Could be fakes.

All DVD home players out there dont read burnt DVD media. Some will read DVD-R and some will read DVD+R or both types depending on the quility of DVD home player you have. Also the quility of the media has alot to do with it as well. Just cause it is new media dosent mean it is GOOD media. take our advice or dont. You came here and asked and we are giving you advice and information.

MAybe you miss understood me larry...they are new, meaning they are not scratched or dirty and last time I checked, TY's were the best.

As far as DVD+R or DVD-R, I'm not exactly sure what they are but I remember before I bought them I did research on the two to see what the difference was and one was newer and was suppose to be better so thats the one I bought- I think it was DVD+R. But this sounds like what the problem is. Thanks for the input.

They arent fake, they are bought through supermediastore and have a TG###### around the hub.

Well they might be TY's but that dosent mean you couldnt have gotten a bad batch of media. But more then likly it is compatiblity issues on the persons DVD you loaned the disc out to.

You can use dvd identifier to determine the ID and format. http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

What make and model dvdrw do you have? You may be able to booktype dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom thus increasing compatability.

sounds like time for the proverbial Nero log.. it's in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log, but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar..

You have to have a dvdrw to burn dvd's. dvdrw = dvd burner. Dvd-rom is the most compatable format followed by DVD-R then DVD+R.

Oh, ok....I have Lite On SOHW 1633 and SOHW 1673. I only use the 1673 for backing up because when I burn it has errors sometimes...I dont know why. The 1633 never had an error once in a year, I installed the 1673 recently myself, thats probably why it doesnt work 100%.

Anyways I think I have the DVD+R ...in the definition on Afterdawn it says that DVD+R are newer and better thats why I bought them instead.

You can use the lite-on booktype utility to automatically booktype your dvd+r/rw media to dvd-rom. Here's a link and there is a user guide there too. http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=83441 You can use dvd identifier http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ to verify that booktype was changed to dvd-rom and also to ID and check format of your media.

Read the article I gave you a link to in one of my other posts. I'm trying to help you make your backups more compatable, and dvd-rom is definitely more compatable than dvd+r. If you don't want my help or advice you should have said so long before I spent my time trying to help you with your problem. Most others (that have dvdrw's capable of doing so) including myself booktype our dvd+r media to dvd-rom. Suite yourself, take my advice or don't. I'm done with ya. Most people are appreciative and say thanks after learning about the benefits of bitsetting.

Here's the link to the article again in case you can't find it.

@Adouble11,

Does it work on your computer? If so, then may be your stand alone dvd player can not handle it correctly. Dvd players that are 2 years and older can not read DVD+R. It (the DVD+R) needs to "book type" as a DVD-ROM format, so it will be easy on all functional dvd payers. This is one of the best and smartest way to go regardless of how old or new your stand alone dvd player is.

On the other hand, I believe that your Printable TY are genuine Yuden though.

WARNING: Do not "update/upgrade" your SAMSUNG BD-D5XXX series (Bluray Player), or else you cant enjoy any of your movie files.

You've probably noticed, I'm running a little low on patience. Sorry. I've been involved in several threads lately where the ppl I'm trying to help refuse to read all the info I have provided and either keep asking questions I've already answered and I have to keep repeating myself or they doubt my advise. Bitsetting is the way to go especially if the manufacturer of their drive has a booktype utility. It definitely won't hurt. Again sorry for the lack of patience.

Probably by now you are wondering what line you had crossed to merit the frosty replies.
Seems that asking a question was ok, but having the the temerity to ask follow-ups was too,too much, even in a 'Newbee' Forum ;)

Recently, this week, I ran into that same error problem. On checking the Log it was noted that my free memory was 90 Meg,and tho' the log indicated a successfull burn, the disc was unplayable in my standalone unit.
Before I had turned to the logs,I switched to a DVD+R disc and tried the booktype scenario.
Only after reading the manual (last resort) I found out that my six month old Toshiba did not list DVR+R as playable and furthermore stated that discs labeled as "DVD-ROM" were also unplayable.
I stopped various processes via the Task Manager, to free memory and the problem vanished.
Now I too shall vanish, lest the godlike seniors notice my unworthy presence.

Adouble11,

Changing the booktype field

This booktype field identifies the disc as either a DVD-ROM, DVD+R(W) or a DVD-R(W) disc and is for a big part responsible for the compatibility. Because this setting is overwritten during the DVD-R production process it can?t be modified afterwards, the laser of your DVD recorder simply can?t write to that part of the disc. During the production of DVD+R discs the space is untouched. Still CSS keys can?t be written to DVD+R discs because every DVD recorder and DVD player has a limit in its firmware to write or read to this space. However, there is no limit for writing the booktype field. Therefor a DVD+R(W) recorder will be able to modify this field by sending a command to the DVD recorder and fool the DVD player.

When the booktype field (bitsetting) is changed to DVD-ROM then DVD players are fooled and will think the user has put in a DVD-ROM disc instead of a DVD+R disc and will read it accordingly. This results in an increased chance that the player is able to read the disc and that?s why the ability to change the booktype field (bitsetting) is essential to a lot of users. Certainly owners of a DVD player that requires this field to be set to DVD-ROM, in order to work properly, will prefer a DVD recorder that supports setting the booktype field.

I gave you a link to answer this question twice.
