is my PS2 dead? please help me

Hello, I woke up today to a changed world, my PS2 is not working properly.
My console is a slim one (SHCP 70012 CB) and it was working just fine yesterday, the last time I used it. It's 100% original, hsan't been opened, doesn't have a mod and I don't use gameshark. Here's where the sad part begins......
I placed my Mercenaries game as I susually do, turned the system on and a funky smell came out of the PS, then it just kept taking me to the browser page, the 2 memory cards appeared and it took like 2 seconds for the disc to appear. Then, I went for the disc and got nothing. You know that usually when you have a PS2 game inside the system it takes you straight to the game, but it always led me to the borwser screen. I tried playing an audio cd and it plays just fine, I can forward tracks, stop, pause, the usual with audio cd's.
I don't know what's wrong with it, but I want her back. Please help me!!! =(

well, can it play dvd movies. if so it isn't what i think it might be.
slims have a laser problem. if it can't play dvd media at all, my guess would be that the laser went dead on dvd's.

I'll check tomorrow morning if it can play dvd media at all but I had a problem playing dvd's, it did something like this, first it'd play the movies like a normal dvd player for 3-4 seconds, then the image would start to go darker and slower until it turned a total black screen and the it started again..... 3-4 seconds of normal play time and then slow, darker........ you get the picture.
I'll try tomorrow to check if the system still plays dvd's the "normal" way

Hey, I got news for you, I just tried to play a DVD and I got this message in the screen "Unable to read disc"....
Could you please tell me what the problem is?

you can try adjusting the laser height. sometimes that is the problem.
to do that you will have to take the top off. and adjust a white cog in the back of the dvd drive. mark you original position so you can go back and just move it one to two clicks at a time and then try it.
if that doesn't help then it might be a worn out laser. that's what happened to me. could play cd's, but no dvd's. so a new laser fixed it for me.

Hey dude have u sorted out ur ps2 yet cos my slimline has screwed up as well. supposedly u can send it back to playstation and get it fixed for free cos there is a one yr warranty wit it or sumfin like that
