I've been reading about ps2 modding for the past week but I haven't turned up much. I am new to the world of ps2 and need a little bit of help with this free ps2 I just recieved from a friend. Here's the case:
He solder modded his ps2 without any issues. Games played for awhile although his dvd tray had a few issues which I read are common. Recently, he gave it up to me due to the fact that the disc in the drive spins for about a second and then stops. This is constant everytime I reboot. I get nothing esle.

What I need to know:
1.Variables, Could that be caused by any of the ribbon cables or a motor or the eye? Even the Alignment of the eye?
2.Can I use a Hard Drive to boot off of only with a mod chip? If not what do I need to get a hard drive working with it.

Everything else is in perfect working order. I'm just clusless on what to check on or read up on next.

I do get display and sound without a problem. Controller works so I wouldn't think its a mod chip problem but I'm no expert.

as far as i know, you can use a hard drive to boot from. however, i don't have one for my ps2 and haven't tried that myself.

does the tray eject fine?

does it play or not play all the diff. media. cd's, dvd's, movies, audio cd's??

could be the laser, or could be bad BA/LA chip or could be one of the wires on the mod came loose and needs to be soldered on again.

Heh I love these things. So many variables. Such a challenge. The tray eject flawlessly unless I fiddle with it every so often. Then it gets stuck but just because I was messing with it and then goes back to normal. I do not know if it plays different types o media disc but i don't have anything but burnt disc so I will have to barrow a real one. Hopefully nothing is bad or I just have to solder the chip again.

Please if anyone knows more info on using an HD to boot only let me know.

as far as i know you need to have a hd loader cd in the ps2's drive to load up the hard drive so if the drive doesn't work i dont think that you will be able to use a hard drive

when you put the cd in do you get the red screen saying "not a ps2 format game" or does it just stay on the browser screen

and do you Know what the modchip is your friend installed

It stays are the browse screen. When I click on browse it says no disc with the white backround. The chip is magic 3. Thanks for stayin strong btw and trying to help me out with this problem.
