Can anyone give me some information on how long it should take to backup a DVD? Simple question I know but it just seems like it is taking me alot of time.

It would be a good idea to go ahead and check your anyway. That way, you know how in the future and might be your current problem.

Check your DMA settings - How ? do this -> Go to Control Panel> System> Hardware Tab> Device Manager> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers> Right Click Primary IDE channel (and Secondary IDE channel after you finish with Primary)> Properties> Advanced Settings Tab> Transfer Mode or go here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616

Do the above from both "Primary & Secondary IDE channels".

I (We) and you need to look at whats in both "Transfer Mode" and "Current Transfer Mode". Screen shot below is what I'm talking about.

If it is in "PIO" mode. Click the "Driver" tab, and uninstall the driver. Then reboot. Upon rebooting windows will automatically reinstall the driver and it should go back to "DMA" mode.

(Your screen may or may not look the same as my screen shots)

The settings were wrong, they were on PIO so I changed them. i will see how that works and get back to you. The length of time it is taking is about an hour(+ or -). Is that the time it should take?

The drive plays a big part of how fast it will rip/encode. Different drives go faster and some go slower.

For me, it takes roughly 15 min to rip a DVD-9 disc (dual layer), then any where from 3 min to 30 min to encode with DVD Shrink depending on how much compression is being used.

Then another 15 to 20 min or so to burn. (Most of the time at 2.4X, some of the time at max 4X)

I just have been putting the DVD in and using DVD Shrink to analyese and then to backup. Am I supposed to be ripping something first? Maybe that is my issue. But also this is what my Device Manager says for Primary IDE: DMA if avaliable and Ultra DMA Mode 5 for the transfer, but for device 1 it says DMA if avaliable and for transfer it says not avaliable. For the Secondary IDE it says DMA if avaliable, but the transfer mode says PIO Mode. and for device 1 it says the same as it does for the primary. COuld this cause a problem. I mean it is taking me nearly an hour to backup a dvd and others are saying 3-30mins.

You don't have to rip first with a different program (such as DVD Decrypter or DVDFab Decrypter), unless its a newer movie which contains ARccOS? or some other new form of copyright protection.

"Not Applicable" just means there is nothing (not a drive) connected to that IDE channel. That is fine and normal.

You do not want "PIO" mode for anything! Uninstall the drive for that channel that is in PIO mode to return it to DMA mode. That is your problem.

I did uninstall and it didn't fix it. As I said it is in the secondary and says DMA if avaliable but the transfer mode won't change to Ultra DMA Mode 5 like the primary one did. Where can I go for help with this. As I said ti is taking me about an hour to backup and an hour to burn. This is ridiculous right? Anything else I can do or check? IS my drive just slow? The drive is a Sony DVD + - RW DW-D56A.

Generally, on your Secondary IDE channel, the best your going to be able to get is UDMA Mode 2. Your hard drive or drives are (should be) on your Primary IDE Channel and your drives should be on the Secondary IDE Channel.

Drives have different limitations on how fast the DMA setting can go.

The Secondary device 0 is set in the DMA if applicable but the current transfer mode is set to PIO. that's the thing I can't change. Sorry I had my wording wrong. Any advice will help.

I finally fixed the IDE problem, both primary and secondary. It still backs up at about an hour (+ -) and i think this is too long. What options do I have to speed up the proscess?

Hi,

Could you break it down for us and tell us how long it is taking to transcode and then how long it is taking to burn?

The encoding still seems to take about an hour or so. Shouldn't it be only 15-30 mins?

Encoding time will vary depending on many circumstances and variables like cpu speed, amount of ram, movie only or entire disc, amount of compression required, and quality settings in DVD Shrink. What are the specs of your pc? Defragmenting your hdd on a regular basis and running adware/spyware utility often is also recommended.
