I have several V7 systems that work fine with SwapMagic. I got a 39001r which I think is a V5 that I just got this week. It will only play originals. I reads SM just fine but when I put in a backup copy, I get the red lines around the tv screen. I was thinking about putting in the dms4 lite solderless chip in it anyway. Before I do, would this help or would I be waisting money? I have tried adjusting the laser and clean it. Is there something else I should do? Thanks.

Well, a boot disc will only do so much because if you hit the eject button to swap, the PS2 will recheck the disc and see that it's a copy. You need either a mod chip or a flip top to get around this. And if you had a good mod chip, you probably wouldn't need SwapMagic.

I am using the fliptop method. The ps2 will read the SM disc fine but when I flip the top and put in the backup game, I get the red screen of death. Does this version have some type of extra protection built in? Will a chip take care of this problem?

Sounds like you might need a patch or DVD Loader. Check www.swapmagicfix.com and see if the game's listed there. If it's not listed, then maybe you have a bad backup

good media, and if it works on your V7 then the
burn must be good too.
A chip would fix all of that if you really want to
get one installed. It would be about $50 for a good chip
DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity
It would be about $50 to get it installed + the shipping
to the company that does it.

Or if you don't want anything fancy then you can get
the DMS4 EZI solderless chip and do it yourself.
It will play all your back ups. But unlike some of the
soldered in chips does not have some special features like
HDD support.

You could try the laser fix http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars/1

Sometimes the laser just needs some adjusting to read back ups...

Can't hurt anything to try it...

another thing I just thought of What ver of Swapmagic are you using?

Some games with older ver of swap magic may need DVD LOADER or CD LOADER

http://swapmagicfix.com/

I'm using 3.3 and my backups work fine on my ver 4
