Hey guys,

I've figured how to convert and burn DVD's on my PC. Here's the problem - the program i used to convert the movies (WinAVI) copied in poor quality, but worse, when playing on any DVD player certain parts of the movie it will freeze and skip, sometimes it will freeze for 10 minutes at a time. Plus, its obivous that the program wasn't written with English as a first language.

I've used Avi2DVD and it's SUPER slow, and the files are way too large after converted. Is there any program that would do a relatively FAST conversion without horrible skips? Thanks.

Oh, and one more thing. The AVI files take up 7 GB which would fit on 2 standard 4.7 GB discs. Is there a converter that can keep the proper quality of the AVIs and not take up more than 2 discs of space?

The size of the AVI file has absolutly no effect on how big it will be after it has been converted to DVD...

The AVI file could be 500mb or 500GB it really doesn"t matter, what does matter is the length of the AVI file and what bitrate you use to encode the AVI file to Mpeg-2/DVD, If you use a Reasonable bitrate you should be able to Fit at least 2 hours of Video on a DVD.....

If you want better quality and Smaller File sizes you have to use a High qualityu encoder and use the Correct bitrate so that the File you are encodeing fits on a DVD-R....

Tmpgenc Pluss is a Good and easy to use Mpeg-2/DVD encoder but it isn"t Fast Like WinAVI is...MainConcept encoder is Much faster than TMPGEnc but it doesn"t have as Many Features but both will allow you to set the Encodeing bitrate to whatever settings you wish...

Also to Figure out what bitrate you should use to encode you should get yourself a "Bitrate Calculator" which will tell you what bitrate to use based on the Length of your Movie so it will fit on a DVD after encodeing to Mpeg-2......Look for a Program called "PowerBit" as it is a Good bitrate Calculator....

Cheers

@Cody_7,

I don't know about you, but for AVI (DivX) files, I use VSO DivXToDVD (the free version 0.5.2.99 setup) to convert and I'm quite impress with the result afterall. It seems pretty fast too (actually it all depends on your system and specs when the process is running). After you're done with the converting process and if your files are too big to fit onto a single 4.7GB blank disc, then you'll have to either (a) encode/compress with Nero Recode 2, or (b) encode/compress with DVD Shrink so it will be perfectly fit onto a single layer DVD-R/+R disc. After that, just use whatever burning programs i.e. Nero Burning Rom or DVD Decrypter, or whatever you desire to do the backing up process.

In addition, I've had used NeroVision Express to convert a few times and it's as good as DivXToDVD as well. Nero will give you the options to make a menu and add some little picture to your project also. In reality, it all boils down to your choice of preferences and what you've had the most experiences hands on.

Well, thanks for the info guys. My main problem is i need to have a decoder that can convert all of my 19 TV episodes in the same bitrate, etc as mentioned above. In WinAVI you can't change those settings, and in Avi2dvd it won't let me convert all of the episodes at once because "They aren't in the same resolution" which shouldn't matter.

VSO's DivX to DVD sounds like a good progam ( i also found it's website right before i read this post, lol) and Nero is a good industry standard. I'll try both =).

The Thing with VSO DivXtoDVD is if your Goal is to get as Much Video on a DVD with the best Quality possible It isn"t the best Choice because it uses an Encoder that is more Based on Speed than Quality pluss it has no options or bitrate settings or Resize settings and if you want your DVD to have Menu"s and Chapters then it is pretty useless.....

Nero (Vision Express) will let you add Chapters and Menu"s to your DVD but it"s encodeing is Just awefull especially compared to some of the High end professinal Encoders.....

I find it is Best to get yourself a Good Fast Standalone Mpeg-2 encoder Like the "MainConcept Encoder" and a Good DVD authoring program so you can add your menu"s and Chapters ect like "MediaChance DVDLab Pro" ...

This way you have Total Controll over the Quality and the File size and all of the Features on your DVD and once you learn how to use the Software it is all you need to put most File types on to DVD and you will be able to Fit anywere from 2 to over 6 hours of Video on a DVD with Varying degrees of Quality....

Cheers

Well, MainConcept encoder is pretty useless. You have to set the file settings for every movie seperately then add them to the list. For somw reason when i set the format to DVD it chances the resolution of the file (thus greatly increasing size) and i can't change it back.

It looks like DivX to DVD is my only choice or Nero. And my video is encoded in 122kbps, and i need a program that will let me set the bitrate - preferably one that doesn't take a rocket scientist like MainConcept. I'm getting real sick of this

I guess you Really want to do it the easiest way possible..

Then use one of the many all in one program like "Ulead DVD Movie Factory 4" or "Sonic MyDVD" or one of the other all in one Programs...The Don"t produce as good of Quality but they will let you make menu"s and add Chapters to your Movies....

I don't need something super easy, i just need:

A) Something that i can convert ALL of my files with some kind of list.
b) Something that i can choose resolution & bitrate of my video with.
c) Something that will do it within a few hours
d) If you can do (B) it should keep files from getting rediculously large.

I just don't understand why one converter will do it fast, then will only do one file at a time. Or, some programs you can convert many files - but it will lack options and your video comes out way to big. I don't understand why programs always turn out that way...
