Recently I hooked up an audio cable from my sound car to my DVD burner. I tried to play an original DVD but there was no sound. I checked all the volume levels, tried another DVD player in my PC, and switched out the audio cable....still nothing. Check this out though: when I put an audio CD in my burner, it plays music fine! What's the dealio here???
Thanks!!!

You checked the levels but were any of them muted. If so, uncheck it.

Yeah all are not muted except for the mic. My DVD player will play audio CDs with sound, but when I play a DVD there is no sound.

Maybe it has something to so with the DVD's audio stream. Try changing streams and see if this does it.

I'm not sure what the audio stream is... I tried to browse the disc and play each chapter, thinking that maybe I was trying to play the frank or spinach version originally.

Usually DVDs have a few audio streams. They will have somehting like stereo AC3, dolby AC3, DTS, etc... not to mention the foriegn ones. These are accessible from special features on the DVD menu.

There may be a chance that your car's dvd player is not compatible with one of the types of audio, or you have you configuration wrong. I do not know about DVDs in a car, just sometimes if a DVD is set to output DTS sound, and your system does not support it, you will not have any sound.

Also, go into your settigs of the DVD player and see what the audio settings are. The problem may be there.

This is for my PC. I am having the problem that I recently tried to play an original DVD in my PC and there was no sound. After troubleshooting it for a while I decided to try an audio CD and it worked..... I tried a couple different DVD players in my PC and they all have no sound. I also tried switching out the audio cable that goes from the DVD player to my sound card. I have come to the conclusion that its not hardware but rather some software setting.....

Sorry....I see the typo in my first post. I meant to say "sound card" and not "sound car". Sorry about the mixup...

Every Dvd has an audio stream (as many as 4-6)...some contain two sound formats...stereo, Dolby Digital, DTS. Was this a copy and if it was will this play in any standalone player for your surround system? If it is the original then somewhere in your system it doesn't read the recorded audio stream. If you play a movie with only DTS audio stream recorded on it in a machine that only handles Stereo or Dolby Digital...there will be no sound. Just trying to eliminate possible problems.

Well i have tried a few more original movies and a couple of burned ones. None of them have sound. I have tried viewing them with both Windows Media Player and Nero Showtime. A couple of the movies that I tried donlt have DTS as an option. Yes, all these movies have sound in my stand alone DVD player.

It seems to not be: the disc, the DVD player progams, or my hardware. Is there some sort of DVD codec or setting that is possibly not in line?

Thanks again for the help!

many people seem to be having this problem (myself included). can't get the WMP to play sound from any of the tracks of the DVD.

i switched to the Media Player Classic, which works great. you can get it from the heroes contributing to sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli
or better yet install the k-lite codec pack, which has it in there. the full version gives you every codec under the sun:

Thanks for the info. I had just tried another DVD playing software. This time I tried PowerDVD and the sound works. That is crazy that these other DVD players dont support sound..... I don't care much for the PowerDVD interface so I'll check out the one you listed above. Thanks!
