I'm not sure if this goes here but I'm wanting to copy some of my VHS tapes onto DVD.
I think my Video card has capture capabilities so I'm looking for some good programs that allow me to just make good copies.Not looking to edit or change them in any way.
Also,maybe a few tips for the beginner! :)) thanks

it would have been better in the "Video capturing from analog sources" forum but you placed it here maybe a Mod will place it there. Just dont go reposting the question in that forum. Keep it here or wait for a Moderator to move it.
Anyway what makes you think your video card can capture video? First off you need to know that it does. and if it does then your video card should have come with a capturing program to capture video sources from an VHS (analog) sourch.
So first make sure it has capture capabilites. Then we can go from there.

i don't see a tv tuner listed there, so you won't be recording anything analog to dvd with that. you either need to go get yourself a good pci tv tuner card (search around here for recommendations) or a new agp/pci-e graphics card with built-in tuner.

there are so many diffrent types of that model out there. But anyway most what you have listed means that the videocard can output to a DVD or an HDTV system it dosent capture.
Does the video card output part look like the picture below if so then it dosent capture. It just oputputs to those connections.
If it looks diffrent then let us know what the model number is. So we know which video card you have. There are alot of GeForce 6600 cards out there. We need to know which 1 you have.
I have a Winfast 2000XP expert capture card from leadtech. Spent $70 on it and havent had no problem at all. It even lets me capture VHS with macrovision protection on it without it not showing up on the captured file.

Thanks again all,I guess I jumped the gun there and misread the info.I'll have to look around for a good Tuner card and do some more investigation at my local PC shop.

If he wants to copy Movie VHS tapes that have macrovision protection on it the VCR/DVD COMBO wont work due to the copy pretection. If he wants to copy VCR home movies onto DVD then that would work.

On the combo VHS/DVDburrner sets you cant crack the VHS Macrovision unless you have a filter conected between the VCR and DVD Burner there is no way to connect a filter between the combo unit.
The only way would be to get a seperate VCR and hook it up to the DVD input part of the combo with a filter between them and then recorde that way but you will end up with a Movie that you can only fast forword or rewind.
It would be best to get a capture card that way after you capture the VHS onto your computer you can load it up in Nero vision express and create chapters and a menu for the VHS captured file.
I have done all my VHS tapes that way. I pop the DVD in and have full access to diffrent points of the reauthored VHS movie.

That's what i'm after,being able to copy Movie VHS to DVD via the PC and then figuring out how to reauthor it.
I will look this weekend for a good Capture card or maybe someone could post a link to 1's they use or know about.

I got a Winfast 2000XP expert capture card and have no problems with capturing Movie VHS videos. Some capture cards do have a problem filtering the macro-vison out so look for 1 that does this.
Also I use Nerovision Express to make the DVD with menus and etc. You can get that with the Nero Ultra edition.

I hope this is of some help, I have Dazzle 150 and pinnacle bought to copy vhs to dvd.
I got fed up and decided to invest in proper hardware:
Cyberhome DVR 1600 dvd recorder connected to vhs recorder using scart lead with tv on top.
simply insert a DVD+R (or DVD-R), specify the length / duration of your vhs movie and set the DVD to the required time setting: 1 hr to 6 hrs.
Press play on vcr and record on DVD - leave it to record and no problems. I have so far transferred 200 vhs tapes to dvd now.

I stated above that he could do that but when you do that you have just 1 long movie you can only fast forword and rewind. That might be ok for you but like I stated you have so much more flexiblity with a capture card and a burrner for your computer.

capturing vhs movies takes, in my mind, too long via pc. I have found out that you need to invest in a very powerful pc: mine is sempron 2400 and 512mb ram with 120gb hdd.
As regards Nero Vision / Ultra, It takes twice as long to import, render and then burn to dvd.
This is "middle of road" and not fast enough. I have dazzle150 video capture (usb) and pinnacle studio plus, connected to vhs recorder.
For normal vhs capture, I still think that your combo or seperates is the best way - even some of my mates have said for vhs backup use this BUT for home movies i.e short camcorder backup then use the pc way.
Everyone has their own ideas...

No matter what way you go your going to have time in the processes of backing the VHS movies up. Id rather do it over the computer rather then in a standalone player where there is more of a chance of somthing going wrong and kicking a bad disc out where if you do it on the computer you pretty much are safeguarding from that.
It takes me the time to capture the video.
(which is wahtever the length of the video is "set the time for the capture card to record" exm: if it has a run time of 90 minute I set the capture card to recored for 90 minutes that way i can do somthing else or set it up at night to record while I am sleeping.)
Then it takes close to 1 1/2 hour's to set up nero vision express to transcode and make the DVD. I have learned in Nero vision express not to auto detect the chapters that takes forever. Instead I just set them manuly myself every 10 minutes apart so i can skip parts of the movie all the way threw it.

As the price of dvds are so cheap (100 = £22), I find it less hassle to simply use the "combo", rather than pc.
So what if a disc gets knackered? throw it away and reset the dvd recorder, begin again.
Saves wear and tear on the cpu etc - a dvd recorder can be replaced far easier than ruining a pc.
Larry - you have your way, I have mine, you clearly like the pc way - your choice mate but MUCH longer!
