I need a little help. I am trying to back up some games and am having some issues. I have an 8X Memorex burner, swap magic, and a flip top. The only game i have succesfully burned is Midnight Club Dub Edition, but even it is a little slow to load and the music stuters a little here and there. I have Nero 6.6 which I have been using and also DVD Decrypter. Had NO lock with DVD Decrypter but got MC3DE to work (kind of) with Nero. I am attempting MOH European Assualt. Still no luck with DVD DE... but Nero burned it, only crazy long load times. I have heard of people burning the same games and them "playing like the original disks". I begining to become frustrated and have ruined 10+ disks on these games. By the way I am using Verb. DVD+R, Memorex DVD-R, TDK DVD+R. Thanks for your help.

scrap the Memorex DVD's, they just don't have a very
good record with PS2 games
The TDK and Verbatim should both work but you PS2 may like
DVD-R better. But try this first, if it doesn't
work then you can always use those other DVD's for movies
which are a lot less picky about media than games
use DVD Decrypter and change the book type to DVD Rom
see the post on this page about
"what's the difference between +R and -R"
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/231288
a member wrote a very goo tutorial there on how to do this.
if that doesn't work get some TDK or Verbatim DVD-R 8X discs
and try those.
Medal Of Honor should copy just fine as i have done
the who series on Philips 8X DVD-R and they work great

I got the MOH to work using the rebuild method, but if I try to only use DVD Decrypter I get a not a valid ps2 disc error. Also it is very jerky when I use the rebuild method or only Nero. It also freezes and the music skips. Also I had already changed to book type. Have you ever tried to use +R discs? If so did you encounter the same issues? I guess I will go pick up some -R discs soon and see how that works. Any other feedback is welcome.

@dansace & whom may concern,

There are a few things you need to know and or look for when it comes to PS2 games or dvd movies backing up. Below is the few important things you have to know.

01) What media to use when you're backing up? Always use high quality grade media such as the famous Taiyo Yuden (real authentic YUDEN also can be found on the FUJI & SONY 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan"), Verbatim (manufactured code: MCC003 & MCC004) and Maxell "Made In Japan" (made by Hitachi - this is one of the top grade media from Maxell).

02) Is your dvd burner up-to-date with its firmware? Go here http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php and have a look around for your current dvd burner's firmware. Updating your firmware can be very useful and helpful to your dvd burner. With that being said; it will be more compatible with other blank media and codes. Not only that but it will increase the performances on burning as well.

03) How fast are you suppose to do your backups? It is recommend to always burn at 2X - 4X only and never to go above 6X or 8X period. Obviously, you'll have to know your dvd burner and its capability. With that being said; you'll also need a high quality media as well. However, the choice is yours to proceed at whatever you desire to do so. In the end, it all boils down to the individuals preferences and experiences, so to make it simple; any backups from 2X - 8X is fine as long as your burner is up-to-date and has some high grade media.

04) What media formats (DVD-R or DVD+R) should you backup on? Again, the choice is yours to make on this case. You'll have to know your PS2 console good enough to tell which is the best for it. According to my understanding, any PS2 console from version 4 - current can play both DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs formats easily (somone correct me if I'm wrong). However, some may not play so well on all DVD+Rs. To solve this problem, you'll need to "book type" or "bitsetting" your DVD+R into a DVD-ROM format, so it's playable on your PS2. Yes... DVD-ROM is the universal format for all PS2 games. As a matter of fact, all original PS2 games (and dvd movies) are pressed as DVD-ROM, thus your PS2 console can easily read/play any of them flawlessly.

5) What should you do when the game(s) you're trying to backup is an original DVD9 disc? Well, there's a 50% - 50% chance that you'll be able to get it to work. Why? Because sometimes you'll need to rebuild it so it can be perfectly fit onto a single layer 4.7GB disc, especially for Swap Magic users. However, there will always be a DVD5 guide/tutorial floating somewhere online in due time once it's cracked.

To be honest, I prefer only "genuine" Taiyo Yuden (or 8X DVD+R FUJI "made in japan") and the Maxell 8X DVD+R "made in japan" over any other DVD-R brands. I backed up all of my PS2 games and DVD movies anywhere from 4X - 8X, on 8X DVD+Rs discs (Made In Japan only), and I always "book type" the backup into a "DVD-ROM" format eventhough my PS2 console version 9 can read/play both formats flawless. However, I found that it is more easier just to change it to DVD-ROM regardless.

Again, in the end, the choice is yours to make.

When i use the +R DVD's i had the same results.
Choppy music and gameplay. My PS2's just do not
like them for games. Movies work fine on them.
I put the same game, on the same brand of DVD but did
it on -R this time and it worked great, no problems.
Trade a friend for a DVD-R that is good quality, like the
TDK or Verbatim, and give that a try. Most games you should
not have to go through all the extra steps of rebuilding it
just to get it to work right.

I have a V7 PS2. Both DVD + R and DVD - R work great.

Never seen to have any trouble with either gameplay, sound or anything!

I'd try using decrypter to rip the iso,and then Nero to burn it back to dvd,
I know most people will say that you don't need a seperate burning program to burn the iso back to dvd,Just that when I used to use the Decrypter Read/Write iso method some of my games had slow loading/Choppy sound (MC3DE was one of them)
When I changed the burning program my backups loaded flawlessly(as good as original)

It's worth a try.
Tell me if it helps.

1.I am currently using TDK DVD-R but I could only find them in 16X. Don't know if that matters. I get it to work but it's choppy as hell. I also have Fujifilm DVD-R 8x disc but think they suck.

2.I have a Mmorex DVD burner and have updated the firmware from the Memorex site.

3.I burn at 2x every time.

4.I was using DVD+R discs but switched to DVD-R discs after reading one of your other posts which steimy pointed me to. I have an older PS2.

I have tried rebuilding the game and still the same outcome. I tried one rebuild method but have seen a few. I have been told that the games I am burning have been successfully burned without rebuilding however. I have all the programs I could need but still can't get it right. It's becomeing frustrating.

@dansace,

TDK DVD-R is a decent media, I've backed up around 10 or some for my PS2 games backups and 15 for movies, and they seems ok averall. However, I prefer only the 8X DVD+R Taiyo Yuden (FUJI 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" only with code: YUDEN-000-T02, and Maxell 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan" -- they're all top notch media and it's flawless. The reason I said this is because all my backups are loading/playing like a champ without any issue whatsoever.

Is your Fuji 8X DVD-R Made In Japan by chance? If not, then it's probably not genuine Yuden media.

What game are you trying to rebuild? The majority 95% of PS2 games are still pressed on DVD5 disc, so it's only like 5% that are on DVD9 disc that will need to rebuild.

In reality, it all boils down to the indivduals preferences and experiences -- so get whatever that's floating in your boat.

i am sure you are frustrated, but hopefully there can be
a solution. Sometimes it is very hard to tell why the games
are not working. There are so many variables to it.
I can tell you the MC3 Dub Ed. and Medal Of Honor
do not have to be rebuilt. I have done both of those on
my 8X DVD-R Philips discs and they work fine.
I have never tried 16X media though.Have you tried burning them
at 4X speed? 2X is kind of slow for that 16X media
I do my 8X media at 4X
Are you using DVD Decrypter or another program?
And i don't remember if you mentioned this or not but
how are you booting them (swap Magic & fliptop, Swap Magic and slidecard, Modchip)?

Made in tawain. Where can I find the genuine Yudens? Do you think it makes that much of a difference? I've heard good things about TDK. THanks for the help.

Steimy-
I'm using swapmagic 3.6 and fliptop. Yes I am using DVD Decrypter. Are there any settings I need to tweak on that program to make it work better, besides the DVD-ROM thing? Thanks again! Gonna try 4x.

@dansace,

You can get the FUJI 8X DVD+R "Made In Japan - on the spindle/package," (this one is genuine YUDEN) at your local Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, Target, CompUSA, MicroComputer, Staples, Sams Club and K-Mart. FujiFilm is rank as #2 class media, but the FUJI 8X DVD+R Made In Japan is manufactured/made by Taiyo Yuden, and YUDEN is rank #1 class media. Below is a guide that will help you to be cautious when buying your next media for any of your next PS2 or DVD movies backups.

Actually, the TDK DVD-R/RW is rank as #1 as well as the YUDEN, Maxell and Verbatim. However, you need to be very careful on the TDK DVD+R, it's made by CMC MAG and CMC MAG produced some of the lowest quality media ever.

Go here, and have a look http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm - this guide is pretty useful.

Fujifilm DVD+R 4x (YUDEN000T01)
Fujifilm DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Fujifilm DVD+R 8x (RICOHJPNR02)
Fujifilm DVD+R 8x (YUDEN000T02)
Fujifilm DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Fujifilm DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPN W11)
Fujifilm DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Fujifilm DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Fujifilm DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Fujifilm DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
Fujifilm DVD-R 8x (FUJIFILM03)
Fujifilm DVD-R 8x (TYG02)
Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 4x (YUDEN000T01)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4x Printable Silver (TYG01)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 4x Printable White (TYG01)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x (TYG02)
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x Silver (TYG02)
Taiyo Yuden DVD+R 8x (YUDEN000T02)
Maxell DVD+R 4x (YUDEN000T01)
Maxell DVD+R 8x High Grade Video (MAXELL002)
Maxell DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Maxell DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (MXL RG02....)
Maxell DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
Maxell DVD-RAM 3x (MXL8)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (MCC 01RW11n9)
Maxell DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)

In contrast, it all boils down to the individual's preferences and experiences. With that being said; yes... use what works best for you. However, just make sure to stay far away from "Memorex" and or CMC MAG, then you won't have to worry much about getting coasters, freezing, pixelation and distorted picture.
