Church needs help - Ultra n00b !! Pros HELP HERE!

Hey guys,

I've searched all over and I've been reading various articles and trying different things. Nothing seems to be working for the quality I need. Here is the problem....

We bought a video camera to record movies to burn to DVD for the church. The video camera records to a SONY - DVDR and our mixing board runs into it to produce the audio. That DVD comes out awesome and clear (sounds nice) once finalized.

I then bring the DVD home and rip the .vob files using Amigo DVD Ripper. I usually rip them to .avi as I have no idea what is better as far as format goes. Then I toss the avi files into Windows Movie Maker and edit the clips, toss in our logo and such and make the final movie. When it's all done I use Super DVD Creator 8.5 to burn the DVD.

The problem is all the DVD's lose soooooo much quality it's horid! So my questions are....

1) Once I have my DVDR from church what's the best way to rip the files and into what format so I can edit them with Windows Movie Maker?

2) Once the editing is done how can I reburn it back to DVD?

3) How can I do all this without losing quality??

PLEASE HELP! THANKS GUYS!

Your problem is over-compression. More compression means less quality. I'm not familiar with any of the progs you mentioned but there should be ways for you to tweak the compression settings in each of them you use. This will mean taking up more space on the disc. You can use upto 4.6GB of space on a disc without any problems. AVI is fine usually referring to DivX movies which are almost always poor quality. Most are using MPEG-4 video compression. This the format you see when viewing a Hollywood movie on dvd so that the way to go. Check out the glossary tab at the top of the site for AVI & MPEG-4 for a great description and understanding. Hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out and if you have any more quality problems, we'll see what we can do from there.

Hi hamlettm, If I read this right your video camera already burns this to a dvd. So when you start to convert to AVI you are going to a lesser quality video already to edit and then converting back again to dvd format with possibly more loss in quality. Try to find a editing program that can do it right from the original dvd. Nero Vision Express may be one that will work for what you want to do. Just guessing here since I never tried to edit a HOME dvd. Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm actually using MPEG Video Wizard which allows me to edit the .VOB files off the DVD. I'm not losing any quality at all! Once I'm done editing I burn back to DVD with NeroVision which produces a near perfect quality DVD for the church. Thanks again guys for pointing me in the right direction!
