Hi all,
I'll try to keep this post as straightforward as possible. I'll setup the scenario and my dilemma, then I will pose several questions.
SCENARIO:
I want to find a backup source for my PS2 memory cards (because they are starting to corrupt every once in a while), and I looked at the Max Drive as a possible solution, in the sense that I can copy the saves on to a USB key and then transfer them to my PC HD. As anyone can imagine, there are many possible solutions to this problem, and this is where I am slightly confused. I own a V7 PS2 (one of the later non-thinline PS2s), as well as Swap Magic CD and DVD, version 2.
QUESTIONS:
1) What does the retail Max Drive package include as its contents?
2) What does the retail Action Replay Max Evo package contain?
3) Is it sufficient to only use an Action Replay Max retail package to transfer my save files onto a USB Pen, or do I need to buy the Action Replay Max Evo package? I don't need the cheats feature, just the save files backup ability.
4) Can I use backups of these CDs/DVDs to perform the same functionality? If so, what is the procedure to have them work the same way?
5) If I can use a USB Pen as an alternative to the Max Drive pen, which brands/sizes have been emperically shown to be compatible?
6) I have heard some say that this backup feature is not very reliable, in the sense that some operations on the memory cards may lead to corrupting memory card data. Which operations are those?
Thanks for all your help.

The AR max evo package should contain the AR max disc, and a usb stick. If you just buy that, you should be able to put all your saves on the usb stick, and from there you could put them on your pc's hard drive.
Be aware that there are Evo packages that don't have the usb stick, so be sure to check before you buy one.

Thanks, but I still need more details and answers to my questions. Namely, can I still backup my game saves using ONLY the Action Replay Max package, and a USB key I bought elsewhere?

That would depend on wether or not the Ar Max recognises the usb key in question... Try the code junkies website, there should be a list of compatible usb devices, or at least someone on their forums should be able to provide you with that kind of info.

Thanks, although I still need answers to my other questions. In fact, I have another question to ask:
7)I have created a PS2 CD via PS2gen and added PS2menu on it. Now, correct me if I am wrong about the process of loading PS2Menu:
- Put in Swap Magic 2
- Put in PS2gen CD, at which point it should load the PS2Menu program
However, When I get to the PS2Menu loading screen, it freezes, and doesn't move any further. Why is that way? Does it load the program on to the memory card? If so, how much space do I need to have in my MC for it to load properly?
Thanks.

I just re-read your post in total, let me answer the questions in order, to maybe clarify things a bit:
1. see http://uk.codejunkies.com/news_reviews.asp?c=GB&cr=GBP&cs=%A3&r=1...
2. All versions of the evo package are dscribed here : http://uk.codejunkies.com/news_reviews.asp?c=GB&cr=GBP&cs=%A3&r=1...
3. If it's just for the sake of storage, you'd be better off with a maxdrive set
4. The answer, to my best knowledge, is no. Most Ar Max articles come with a "Key" card (looks like a memorycard) that you need if you want the ar max disc to work
5. Check www.codejunkies.com
6. I know from personal experience that making use of the Crushing features of the Ar max system may lead to corrupted data from time to time. but since you only seem interested in transferring data, this shouldn't pose too much of a problem.
7. I think you'd need to have the independance compiler on there as well, check http://www.exploitstation.com/ 's FAQ on that, it should have all the answers.

I remembered something else. I mentioned earlier if it was possible to use a backup of Action Replay Max. Would I be able to load it if I preceded it with a Swap Magic CD? Or does it not work regardless of the circumstance?
