i just bought my first dvd burner for my cpu. I did what everyone recommended i downlaoded shrink and decrypter.Well i backed up and burned my first 4 dvd's today, crash, layer cake, hitch, and million dollar baby.Anyway i was wondering why everyone says you need dvd decypter cause the 4 movies i backed up, all claim to have the copyright encryption on them according to the back of the dvd case and when i ran them through Dvd shrink it said in the analyzing window that they were not encrypted. So basically dvd shrink compresses and decrypts it for you.all 4 copies i made all worked and were perfect. whats the deal?

Did you rip the DVD's first with DVD Decrypter?

Did you have DVD43 or AnyDVD running in the background at the same time you were running DVD Shrink?

DVD Shrink cannot handle some of those titles by itself. That is why you need DVD Decrypter to first remove the copyright protection so that DVD Shrink can open them.

no i dont have either one of those on my cpu. i have shrink, decrypter, and Nero.what i basically do is put the dvd i wanna backup and burn in my dvd rom drive,i then insert a blank DVD-R disc in my dvdr drive.i go to my c drive, create a new folder for the dvd files to be sent to.and shrink analyzes it,backs it up,then Nero automatically opens up and burns, then my perfect copy is done.

freak, I think jmet busted out a canned response on you. A lot of people ask about Hitch and stuff, so he probably just assumed you had the same issues that other people have encountered.

You're right, Shrink is often smart enough to handle of the decryption responsibilities, and works as a one-click solution. However, for some discs ("Napoleon Dynamite" is one that I've experienced), the encryption is too much for Shrink to handle, which is where Decrypter comes in handy. There's no way to know if Shrink is going to work or not for a disc until you try it, and that can be time consuming, which is why the general wisdom around here is to just use Decrypter first, because the results of Decrypter will always work with Shrink. So long as you're getting staisfactory results, stick with what you're doing. But it's nice to have Decrypter around for those times when Shrink can't handle everything all by itself.

I have yet to find a problem using Shrink except movies that have the running man at the beginning, but shrink can still fix this with a couple of clicks. I have however run into movies that can't be copied due to bad "pressing". Basically Shrink is the best thing ever.

Ditto that pmaknelho, I find SHRINK to be amazing add Nero and your set. The other popular programs mentioned through out the forums have their uses I guess, But I'd say now and with limited experience in burning DVD'S that SHRINK & Nero are the perfect combination for backing-up analyzing and encoding DVD copies with no noticeable compromise to picture or sound quality. Before I downloaded SHRINK, I had to wait longer than I wished to back a movie up to my hard drive or disc with just Nero. Now I can analyze & recode with SHRINK very quickly and then back up my movie with Nero in just under 30minutes. If I just burn a saved movie from my hard drive it only takes 15mins. I find that one program can override the other in helpful ways too. When I recently backed up "The Corporation" though SHRINK compressed and analyzed the DVD it gave me a pop-up that said the disc file was too large for a standard Sony DVD+R. I simply closed SHRINK and burned the same file using Nero alone to the same disc SHRINK rejected as too small? Yeah, wierd but it works!!! Now add the fact that many are discovering that SHRINK will remove encryption. Maaaan, You can't go wrong with these two. Just add good media and go.

ok thank you theBrowns, and buckmastr i just downloaded shrink last last week so i guess the latest version. Now dont get me wrong i am a newbie, ive been burnin dvds for under a week now,and im just assuming right now i'm having very good luck with shrink and Nero spitting out good copies. Im sure i'll have issues with other dvds in the future and i might have to use decrypter, but for now i havent had to use it.and ive upgraded from 4 successful burns to 7,my latest successful first time good copy burns with just using shrink and Nero are fever pitch, sin city, and napoleon dynamite.

dvdfreak1: That same combination of DVD Shrink and Nero works well for me and sounds like it is working well with you.Majority of dvds are DVD-9 so they have to be compressed anyways,so I skip the decrypter step. Just wait till you run into The grudge/resident evil apacalypse and some other sony production dvds. Then you'll need the handy program called AnyDVD to help DVD Shrink with cracking the encryption or DVD Decrypter in file mode.

It's also nice having dvd decryptor just in case you need a stronger ripper on some damaged dvds and the sony arccos encryptions that DVD Shrink can't handle. You'll be able to tell the sony arrcos encryption because the initial quick analyzation in DVD Shrink will give you a crc error.
The extra burn engine with DVD Decrypter can also help out because sometimes Nero can be finicky. All 3 programs work well together,no conflicting issues.

Napoleon Dynamite was a DVD-5 movie. You only had to use DVD Decrypter in ISO read and ISO write.

What brand name and model # is your DVD-RW drive?

your sony dru-710a is a rebadged lite-on sohw-1633s or 1653s. This burner has booktyping capability.

Keep this in mind if you run into dvd players that don't want to play your memorex dash backups that you have the bit-setting capability of booktyping the plus format to dvd-rom,making your backups more compatable.. .

Good Luck and burn on!

alright well i started this thread because i was burnin movie after movie without having to use decrypter, and just using dvdshrink and Nero.I now have successfully have backed up and burned such movies as MONSTER IN LAW,BEAUTY SHOP,HITCH,SIN CITY,FEVER PITCH,CRASH,THE GIRL NEXT DOOR,ETC....,without any problems, until now.

well when i got home this morning my g-friend asked me to rip and burn BEAUTY SHOP,MONSTER IN LAW,for her.MONSTER IN LAWwas first, everything went well.then i popped in BEAUTY SHOP and low and behold my first pop up in dvdshrink stating that "this disc is copyright protected and cannot be copied".I was like wow,the way i was going i didnt think i ever had to use DVD Decrypter.well then i closed the pop up,and for the hell of it i wanted to be sure it wouldnt rip,but for some reason i ran it through shrink anyway and it ripped and compressed fine,so why did the pop up come up saying i cant rip or burn this disc and it let me anyway?moving on,now i decide to back up KUNG FU HUSTLE and sure enough dvdshrink only let me get to %9 analyses and it froze up,so i thought it worked for BEAUTY SHOP why not try it again,so a secong time i tried to rip it through shrink, same thing. So i sucked it up and ran it through decrypter, then shrink, and burned it wit Nero, came out perfect.

So the moral of the story is DVD Decrypter is an essential program when you wann rip and burn certain dvd's.after i was done checked the back of the case of KUNG FU HUSTLE,and i noticed it did have the ever so popular sony encryption that people seem to have problems with,i guess shrink cant handle the sony encrypted dvds.i know this is kinda long but thanx for reading, peace

Dvdfreak1, I use decrypter to rip to HD first because I seem to remember someone on here saying it was easier on your dvd drives. I use the Shrink and Nero to encode and burn. I added AnyDVD to the mix for when decrypter (which sadly is no longer updated) cannot handle newer encryption systems. I have yet to have a problem with backing up any disc. Not bad for 40$ and some downloading. Especially compared to the prices people are paying for 1-click programs (cough, cough, x-copy) that can't handle the newer discs!

Oh, and dvdfreak1, a bit of friendly advice, dump the memorex!!! I started off using memorex media and can't believe how they have degraded. Some in a very short time. Look for some genuine Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I only use the Taiyo's now and cannot get over the difference. Burn the good stuff at 4X and you'll have discs that last a LOT longer. Check out the dvd-r media section here for lots of info on good media! Happy burning!

dvd_craze: You have to use the plus format media to be able to booktype. Your sony DRU-800A is also a rebadged lite-on. Lite-on has it's own utility to booktype, and you can download it here:

http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download.htm

I have heard that the rebadged liteys can also use that utility.

katz_61, try DVD Decrypter in File mode, then open up DVD Shrink and fink that iso folder. There you can re-author for main movie only.

Here's another guide you can check out:

Yes, Plus media!

I know that lite-on booktyping utility will work with your sony, but a firmware update/and /or crossflash may be in order. Kivory666 has a few of those sony DVD-RW drives that are re-badged liteys,so you may want to pm him on that utility.

Dvd_craze, Yes can can re-copy your backups.

Dual drives: Use the copy disc feature of nero/sonic/roxio/etc.Sonic takes me 5 mins longer for some reason than Nero.

Or back it up again, just like you would do any original. It's already down to size so no compression needed.Takes a little longer, but not as riskier than on the fly. Also DVD Decrypter ISO read and write.

Single drive: Rip the backup with DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO read and Mode ISO write. That would be by far the fastest way to backup.

Just remember a few things when you do your first backup copy that you plan on re-ripping:

Use high quality media,no cheap manufacturers like cmags.
Keep burn speed at 4x max
Keep backup target at 4360 mbs
No multi-tasking
Quality burner.

If planning on re-ripping your own or someone elses backups, those errors must be reduced on the first copy. Too many errors, and it will be tougher-even impossible due to CRC errors.
Using those 5 tips enables me to re-rip just about anything I backup regardless if it is DVD Decrypter or on the fly with Nero at 100% success rate.

Hey Saugon thanks again for the info. One last question. Sometimes i run into dvd's that rip with no sound. I recently ripped Mortal Kombat but when i play it back from the hard drive no sound. I used DVD Shrink and i left the audio section alone, english 5.1 and french were checked marked. I never burned it cause i figured since it had no sound it would burn with no sound.Any ideas?thanks in advance.

I never messed with playing files off my hard drive. I just plop in the backup on my backup machine and watch it while I screw around on my main pc.I'm going to have to try that this weekend.

If any compression what so ever,I only tick AC3 5.1 CH English only. Untick the rest.I even untick the sub picture and any other crap that I can to keep down the compression.
